I was in class tuesday. It's a microeconomics class in college. We were discussing business when this girl from sweden said "asians are taking over" in terms of business. I almost wanted to say something responding to what she said but held back. I'm from nyc queens by the way and my college is in the city. Do you guys think i should have said something to her in front of the class?

No, I don't see how that would be such a harmful joke.

Her comment is maybe a bit off kilter but I wouldn't say it is overtly offensive. Heck - asian people probably are taking over business in New York. I personally find race jokes funny - whites, blacks, mexicans, asians; the whole group - but you should be very careful about spouting them off in a public forum like a college class.

Racist comments really bother me but a positive racist thing won't cause me to react. Calling a Asian smart wont bother me at all.

It is kinda true, in a sense (I'm Chinese btw).

Personally, I wouldn't take offense to that but I can see how someone can interpret it that way. I'm more interested as to what prompted her to make such a statement. Was she discussing some relevant topic with her peers? Was she answering a question from the professors? Did she just blurt it out, completely unprovoked?

Given the environment you were in (college campus in a business class), I'm leaning toward giving her the benefit of the doubt... she probably was having a discussion about the current economic landscape. Unless TC you know the specific context in this scenario.

I don't really care about remarks about my race etc. but if they do I find it funny to give them **** about their one just to see the look on their faces and their reaction which is generally priceless.

Why do you keep over-thinking what people say to you so much? Just like in your other post about the gas station peeps. If your trying to clearly figure out what they meant, ASK THEM YOURSELF.

basically what happened was and i'll be honest.....the professor was talking about how alot of busineses are moving to china hence "made in china" and that they have billions of dollars. Alot of our money is going over there and such. So a little more bashing on china continues for like another 30 seconds. Then the girl from sweden raises her hand and says "asians are taking over, look at the book store downstairs, they created china towns in cities in america", this is when i got mad and said "what you said was B.S and i said the words, there are hispanic/black/jewish etc. communities also in nyc". Part that doesn't satisfy my anger is that she wasn't even looking at me. i sat in the back and she sat in the front. i kind of looked bad in the class also cause noone really responded to what i said.

Not so sure what this "bashing on China" entails, but my guess is it probably prime you enough well before the girl made that comment and she pretty much pushed you over the top...

Again, personally, I don't find that offensive at all. It happens so much it really numbs me... really is a sad thing after I thought about it, but it is true.

Thanks you just gave me more words to use on Xbox live. Also yes I get offended. But not by the true things. Like when people say I like fried chicken. I look at them stupid and say "yeah"

Well, her observation.. would be accurate. And not necessarily racist. The thing is when it comes to racism and intolerance.. it is entirely circumstantial.. and the intent of the person can be seen as malicious, or hateful.. compared to just a playful attitude. It's a hard line to separate. Ultimately, I question, and look down on people who have promote the discrimination of others.. but it's not not so simple as this a racist comment.. this isn't a racist comment. Some people say stupid things without thinking.. and next thing you know you've labeled them a bigot and don't like them.. That is also discrimination and can lead to dire consequences.

I'm probably alone on how I stand about racist jokes. I find them quite funny but I think they're interesting. They're interesting because it's relieving to know that society has progressed to a point where actual racism is a thing of the past and we can make light jokes about it.

This. I also find them funny and agree with your college class scenario. But it depends on how close knit you all are.

In my college class everyone became really good friends. The white guys could tell racist jokes to the black guys and they would laugh.

I have been very touchy about racist comments especially since I started to notice them even more than usual. It was around 1978 when I entered into a marriage that was both biracial and binational. She spoke very little English. we/I ended up on the receiving end of some hateful words. I call my family members on racist comments and in a public forum I am(or try to be) polite but I will say "how do expect me to take a comment like that?" or "If they work harder they will do better, what is wrong with that?" However the scenario you are talking about.....the context is important in order to know how you should react and if you should at all. context is important and there is not enough here on which to base anything.

I don't get offended by the actual joke but by the double standard. I'm white and have been at the punchline of many racist jokes. If I was to ever tell a similar joke though I'd probably lose my job.
