Well? Do you have a Firewire or USB external HDD? I am just wondering because I recently picked one up since it would be much easier to store all my media on there so I could play it on my Tele. It is nice to backup your PS3 every year or so just in case, and then it is just nice for old files that you don't really need on your flash drive, but still want to keep like last semesters work, notes and handouts. I bought one of those Western Digital 500GB Passports. I was going to get a 1TB stand-alone for the same price, but then you need an extra power supply to power it, and on top of that, it i pretty huge. But anyways, I have a imac that I use most of the time and I was wondering, is it really good to keep that thing plugged in all the time, even if I am not going to be using it. I probably use it like two or three times a day just to transfer my days work or to retrieve something off it. And then maybe once to watch a show or movie on my PS3 and plug it in there. So I was wondering, is it just better for me to keep it disconnected most of the time with properly ejecting it and whatnot, or can you just leave it in 24/7 or for like the 12-16 hours my mac is on for a day???ice_radonI have an ESATA hardrive enclosure that can fit 4 hard drives in it. I turn the power on and off on mine regularily because my comp is in my room and it makes a lot of noise. Other times I leave it on all night because my computer is on all the time doing folding@home. I don't think it really matters but I would just turn it off when I turn my computer off.
It makes life so much easier if you just keep everything on an external hdd. Reformating the hdd is easy as pie
Every time I upgrade my system I religate my old HDD's to an external enclosure, thus I have a couple floating around. A 40GB in a PATA enclosure and a 120GB in a SATA enclosure. Newegg is the bawls for cheap enclosures.
How many of you boast a Newegg case badge when you could quite easily stick a different badge in that holiest of holy's?

About this much

It is ok to disconnect it all the time as long as you eject it properly. I never leave mine on because it randomly starts up at night and is quite loud.

In Windows XP or Vista an icon that looks like a USB plug should appear on the left hand side of the task bar. In Vista you just have to click and select the drive. In XP you get a little dialog Window, in which you have to select the drive and hit stop. You can also go into [My] Computer, right click the drive, and select "remove safely".
On the Mac I believe you just drag the drive icon to the trash can.
