i do. they dont even let me go as far as the sidewalk. :? i might be raep'd or killed apparently. my options for how to spend the winter break are pretty much: eat, sleep, play video games, or watch tv. the only thing i even really want to do is take a walk unsupervised, especially since i have a lot of spare time now, and the weather is so nice out (i live in arizona, the weather in winter is perfect imo).

also do you think its right for someone to blame their overall fail-ness in life on their upbringing? ive been reading a lot of about overprotective parents and the effects on their children and a lot of it rings true for me. is it my fault that i cant really handle myself in social situations? was it my parents overprotective attitude? or are we all just destined to be who we are at birth?

My mother makes sure im protected, thou never tries to interfere and never limits my options (e.g blocking Social Sites)

The most over protective thing my mother has ever done would be making sure i don't get completley smashes when im drinking alcohol and always being just a phonecall away.

No, my parents aren't really protective at all. I think they would rather me get out there and do stuff by myself so I learn to be independent.

uh now thats a good question, what makes, an overprotective parent? these days in society, things can be interpreted in many different ways. truths get fabricated and people get mixed up so now you have raised the question: What is the definition of "overprotective"?

Kind of, I constantly have to reassure them that I am an adult and capable of making my own decisions whether they agree with them or now

i would say its any parent who wont let their kid leave their care under the fear that everyone out there is out to get them... i know its kind of vague but im talking about the kinds of parents who think going outside is one of the most dangerous things their child could do,

They're not protective, they're restrictive (of my entertainment habits). The want me to do better in school (which I certainly should) but they don't restrict my movements.

For better or good, our upgringing can have a big influence on us and the decisions we make in life, but ultimately, we get to have the last word. The sum of our personality is made by our past, I guess.

My parents don't care if I leave the house to do whatever.

but that's probably because I live in a rural area where all you can do is hike in the woods.

Mine don't really care what I do, as long as I come home every night. Only another few months before I go to uni so even that's out the window soon.

Not really. The thing is, my parents both work at schools, my dad works at the one I go to. They know what kids do, especially my dad, and my dad finds out everything, so I wouldn't be able to do anything if I wanted to, and they know that. But they let me go out pretty late with my friends and such.

Somewhat, though that's to be expected since I'm a first child. Everyone I know is a 3rd or 4th child and their parents don't even know they exist.

Well they are protective enough, enough so they aren't intrusive and annoying. It's my sister that they are overprotective on, she'll either get sexually assaulted, do drugs, get drunk, well that's what my parents are scared of anyways. They don't really mind all that much, because I'm a male and men don't get raped....for the most part at least.....nonetheless, I'm not saying it's fair but females should take extra precaution in clubs and whatnot...well I guess everyone should be cautious when out in public where there is alchohol.

My mom wasn't (who I lived with), but my dad sure as hell was. If I was going out to a party with friends, my mom would just say have a good time and call to let me know yall made it safely. Call if you need me. If my dad found out I was going, he would give me the 3rd degree and a lecture. "you better not do this and better not do that. you shouldn't even go. Them kids are bad news." Funny thing is, anybody that didn't wear american eagle, polo shirts, and had hair past their ears was bad news to my dad.

My mom just trusted me. She trusted that she raised me right. She knew that I knew/know my limits when drinking and that I use common sense. She allowed me to experience things and be myself. My dad on the other hand wanted to make every decision for me, even to go so far as to try and pick my clothes and say what to wear. Which is why I never went to see him. He pushed me away by doing that.

my parents always used to censor me from things.. movies, music, etc.. i still found a way to access them all anyways though haha. i kind of resent the censorship i grew up with as i dont see it as a great parenting style but i also realize that my parents let me go out practically whenever i wanted to be with people and they trusted me not to get into stupid **** (kinda did anyway lol.) but overall i would say they weren't over protective.

That just shows your sister is immature and doesn't know how to handle herself. I see girls that just turn 18 or hit 19 and think their first* night at the bar means drinking as much as possible. In return they make an ass of themself and bad stuff happens. You gotta learn your alcohol limit and pick your bars/clubs right. Around here there is good bars to go chill with friends at and maybe meet some people. There are good clubs where you can go to dance and have a good time. Then there is bad bars where you go to get in fights and start trouble. There are bad clubs where men and women go to laid for the night or get some drugs. You just have to learn which places are which and avoid them. Then learn your alcohol limit. and try to remember where your friends are. I'm usually the most sober one out of my friends because they drink a little too much and get rowdy, so I calm them down. In the state of Louisiana, you can get into some bars at 18, incase anybody was wondering.
