so today at work (i work as a price checker at the real canadian superstore btw) it was kinda slow, so i went to customer service, and i was talking with the girl there because there was nothing better to do. After a few minutes another girl came up, and handed in an aplication form, the girl had black hair, with a bit of red on top, she was probably about 16, or 17 (my age), she was wearing all black, and black nail polish, she was obviously goth, but not very over the top like alot of people, and after the girl left, the girl i was talking to at customer service said "like she'll get hired", after she said that i asked why, and she said "she has a wierd hair color, and black nail polish" or some crap like that, i was thinking "WTF?" sure she was goth, but i don't think having black, and red hair would prevent you from getting a job, and black nail polish can easilly come off, and it's not like she would be wearing black at work, she would have to wear the superstore outfit like evryone else, but it just disgusted me to see how shallow, and how judgemental some people can be.

so do you judge people based on how they look? i rarely do, and the few times i do judge people based on how they look it's usually the very preppy looking peopl, and i think that they're probably shallow, and spoiled, and most the time i'm right (like the girl who was working at customer service)

Im sure being goth (or an emo which is embarassing too) makes it harder to get a job.

You think such a person could get a job as ... a lawyer or as a doctor? Or get a place at where you work? People (and Im talking about 70-80 year olds mostly) wouldnt like tohave any contact withsuch a person which is thought of as ... a freak, a punk.

Think 'bout it.

Based on the length of that post, I'm going to assume it's garbage and not read it.
And no, under NO circumstances do I judge based on appearances.

The fact of the matter is... everybody judges everyone else. Some actually go by it, and some are interested to see how their original judgement can be turned on its head.

I wear black nail polish occasionally, I wear black shirts all the time, jeans most of the time, occasional bodage pants, 2 ear peircings, and very dark brown hair with heavy blonde highlights. Does that make me goth? Hmmm... Ohwell, w/e. Anyway, I give most people a chance unless theyre a flat-out **** to me. Although I cant stand the gangster type when they have their pants halfway down their ass and talk in a way that is pretty hard for me to understand. Pretty much everyone gets a chance for me.

Well, there's personal, and there's professional. Judging people by their looks on a personal level is going to be your prerogative, but it's shallow narrows your potential for meeting new and interesting people. On a professional level, I feel like t's justified.

If you go to a job interview, you need to look like a professional. You can't just expect everyone to learn all about your special inner spirit right off the bat. And especially in retail - looks count. Maybe that's unfair, but it's true. An employer and an establishment are being represented by their employees, and you want that to be a good impression. That's why most workplaces have dresscodes.

Fortunately for this girl, she wasn't at an interview, she was just filling out an application. Unless she put "By the way, I have punky hair and black nails, is that cool?" on the application, the employer won't be considering those things until they meet face to face, at which point the girl will have a chance to decide how she wants to present herself to a potential employer.

I think it's silly when someone dresses up in semi-outrageous apparel and then complains that people judge them by their looks. If you didn't want to make an impression or a statement with your physical appearance, then why don't you just dress like everyone else? If you want to make a statement - fine. But you can't get upset because people don't respond positively.

In tat case the girl was right. Employees don't want people like that working for them. Most adults want a well spoken "handsome" prson, not some girl who looks like she'll summon Satan so he can... do things to her etc etc.

In everyday circumstances... I probably judge the same way.

Yes we all do. The way people dress and present them selfs say alot about them.

For example if I were hireing people for a job, and somone comes in looking all gangster I wouldent want to hire them most people who think their gangster at least in at my job do as little work as possible, stand around and talk to each other loud and rude and get fired in a month for not doing any work.

I do judge people based on their appearance to some degree, but my mind can be changed. Nothing is set in stone until I at least talk to the person.

Yes, honestly I do. It's not like I automatically hate them or like them or anything, but when I see a person that dresses a certain way, it does affect my impression of them.

When some guy walks in with a pink polo and pop'd collar, and an upside down visor halfway on his head, I think to myself, "I probably won't like him." Same with several other stereotypes. But just because I think that I probably won't like them doesn't affect how I treat them or really feel about them; I don't determine that until I've actually met them.
