It's not like there's a trick to it that will allow you to do the vocals you want to do immediately. It takes time, practice, and experimentation. I've been experimenting for a year now, and I can pull off death vocals, but not for very long, as it causes a lot of strain on the voice, so I still need to practice it, and you need to know how to breathe correctly and efficiently for it. Think of it as regular singing, only with more vulgar mannerisms to it, it requires just as much work to it, and it deals with the same breathing techniques.
All I can tell you is to experiment and to find your own vocal range, because that's really all there is to it. You're probably not going to end up sounding like a particular vocalist that you are going for, but that's just how it is. You need to do it the way you can do it, rather than do it the way someone else does it.
I can do it for about a few minutes. I know I'm not going to sound like a certain one, but I want to find the deepest sound that I can make. I've heard that there are ways to do it without putting unesscerry strain on your voice....jkmetalf
Yeah, I've been looking into that, and I got the Zen of Screaming, and I found that such a technique is very hard to master. It'd be better if you get the basics down first and practice some with the strenuous style first to get a feel for vocals, and then move on the the advanced techniques. I've been practicing for a year, and I can do prolonged vocals for about an hour and a half, as I have practiced with bands at my school before, so it would help to get with a group and practice vocals. I'm assuming you're at a young age like me (I'm 16), so that would mean that your voice hasn't completely been adjusted for adulthood, which doesn't happen until you're around 18-20. But keep practicing and you'll be able to do them just fine within a few years. Vocals are just as challenging as an instrument, and constant practice is really all it takes to get them down right, in much the same way that it takes a few years to become skilled with a stringed instrument like the guitar.
i really need to learn how to do the "waaahh!" scream (at 1:47, though not the best example) and and the "bohhhhhh" growl (at 11 sec). are these hard to nail? (considering these aren't really death metal too)lonewolf604
that intro song to death note?

yeah, oops i have the wrong link for the first oneYou dont know how to yell?EVOLV3
Well it's more than just yelling, as it involves guttural growling, which isn't quite the same.
There should be guides online somewhere. I've heard of people searching the web for such a thing.ChaosRyder665
Well there are, but they aren't very comprehensive. Anything that has to do with instrumental or vocal techniques is more of a "hands on" thing.
Then the best advice is to just practice practice practice.ChaosRyder665
Exactly. It's all about experimenting and finding your vocal style, and then perfecting it.

It's a DVD.
[QUOTE="jkmetalf"]Can you help me learn? Brmarlin
Nope, and I hate death metal. I love the album No Control though, great avatar.
Yeah, I've seen you around with the against the grain cover. Br is so awesome, I just hate it that I won't ever be able to see them live. :-( .
I'm living proof that you can enjoy both death metal and punk! Ha!.
Type diaphraghm on wikipedia and learn how to use that just say "SSSSSS" and increase it in volume going up and down and you should feel a muscle in your stomach thats using your diaphragm now you must breath out while swinging and movement of your tongue works well. Doing this technique i sound very very similar to chris Barnes although i am still working on it and it dosnt hurt my throat at all!paulie69
I read about this, and I tried a little today. I did not know about the tongue movenment (slipping a little tongue? I'll have to try it).
