Hell yes, they are one of those bands that can simply do no wrong, from Orchid to Watershed not a single bad album:D Darth-Caedus

I hate Opeth. They fill all the requirements it takes to hate a band and then some... 1) Popular? Check 2) Long, drawn out songs? Check 3) Boring? Check 4) Massively Overrated? CheckGodLovesDeadI agree on everything except popular. Popular bands can still be good. But yeah, all your other points are valid.
They're one of my favourite bands. My favourite Opeth album is My Arms, Your Hearse, and my least favourite is Blackwater Park (because of the first seven songs).

I have never heard Opeth on the radio and frankly even if I did I don't know why it would bother me.

But if they're massively popular, and I find something wrong with the music - then it becomes a huge negative. I can't even walk into a Guitar Center without Opeth fanboys stinking the place up. And I agree with Juggernaut. Agalloch is better. Occasionally boring, but better.

[QUOTE="Juggernaut140"][QUOTE="GodLovesDead"] Darkthrone doesn't have 1/3rd of Opeth's listeners and not 1/10th of Opeth's popularity.GodLovesDeadStill a very popular band Either way, they don't fulfill my other 4 points of hating a band. Think of it this way: Soulja Boy exists - but nobody ever heard of him. Your friend sends you a link saying he just heard of him and tells you to listen to him. Wouldn't you think he's a lot easier to hate with his popularity?
Good point
Well, I had to go back and listen to them to remember why I don't like them:
Opeth - The Drapery Falls
Note, this is probably a shorter, 10 minute version of the song, due to the limitations on Youtube.
1:45 into the song and the same riffs has been playing. You know they aren't bad riffs, the bass riff is actually pretty good, but they're not terribly exciting either. Would make a nice intro if it wasn't so damn long and therefore monotonous, 1:45 and I really have to fight the urge to stop listening.
Now, it slides into a long-drawn out acoustic passage that lasts until 3:56. There's a few "moody" guitar licks going on and the vocals are decent, but honestly, 3:56 is long enough for an entire song and I feel as though this one hasn't even started yet. I'm bored.
A riff kicks in that's reminiscint of the intro. Sounds droning and dull. Loud, but dull. The vocalist tries to make a melody out of the motony of the song with a sort of choir-like wail, but honestly, it isn't working. It's just adding to the droning effect. 4:35 it breaks into a guitar solo that isn't anything special, not to mention it's half-driven out by the droning of the dreaded-repeating riff anyway.
Now, it finally does something. Growling vocals kick in, a new riff to boot and just when you think it's going to go into another 2 minute long stagnate repeat, it changes, and then changes again, and again. And finally we've got what sounds like a song. It's now 7:47 and i'm actually liking what i'm hearing. It breaks into an acoustic passage, before going back to another distorted riff. Good. It does that again, to good effect. The song (or this version of it) the fades out in similar way to the way it started (a long boring beginning, a long boring end).
In a 9:59 song, I hear 3 minutes (roughly 5:00 - 8:00) of what I like. Not something I love. But it's Ok.
This is why Opeth sucks. They have no sense of pacing. They don't know how to trim the fat. Long-drawn out, boredom is the best way I can describe it.The song is as repetetive as my use of adjectives in this post. I have listenened to many Opeth songs in the past and found them the same.
I like them, but a lot of their songs drag out and sound too similar. I'm all for long songs, but a lot of theirs just aren't that exciting
It's between Still Life and My Arms, Your Hearse for me
Exactly described my experience with them.Well, I had to go back and listen to them to remember why I don't like them:

I still don't know how people listen to Sunn O))). I try to be open minded and I'll relisten to music as much as I need to until I "get it". I just don't think I'll ever "get" Sunn O))).
