I personally love to discover foreign movies, particularly from Asia (Japan, Korea, China) but also from Europe. I'd like to see what foreign movies you guys have seen. I'll start by listing mine. Of course what's foreign to me may not be to you.

-Honogurai mizu no soko kara (Dark Water) - Japan

-Bijitâ Q (Visitor Q) - Japan

-Gwoemul (The Host) - Korea

-Goodbye Lenin! - Germany

-Dekalog (The Decalogue) - Poland

-Crna macka, beli macor (Black Cat, White Cat) - Yougoslavia

-Kairo (Pulse) - Japan

-Ringu 1, 2, 0 (The Ring) - Japan

-Sien nui yau wan (A Chinese Ghost Story) - China

-Ciudad de Dios - Argentina

-Da hong deng long gao gao gua (Raise the Red Lantern) - China

I'm sure I'm forgetting many others because I've seen plenty. I love all of the above for different reasons.

What about you?

I don't own any foreign movies, and I don't watch many either. If it has subtitles, I won't watch it at all.

It depends on the film. I like The Downfall, which is in German, and lots of Japanese films are good.

MattUD1, have you seen Kagemusha? I didn't but I know it's considered a great samurai film.

Absolutely. It makes me sad that people refuse to watch films just because they have subtitles (unless you have genuine reading difficulties of course). I feel that this encourages lazy remakes of foreign language films into English which then buries the original even further, examples include The Grudge, The Ring, Dark Water and one of my all-time favourites Infernal Affairs. Sorry, I am getting off point here.

I recommend all those listed above and Oldboy, Downfall, A Tale of Two Sisters, City of God and Yojimbo.

I was going to use it for a report I had to do on AK, but opted for SNS instead. I absolutely love Rashomon, even though almost all the c*lass fell asleep.

Me too! I'm fascinated with every different culture but for some reason, Asia has always attracted me more.

I seen some but didn't enjoy it much because I had to read subtitles.AnimeKiller

Yeah, it takes time to get used to it. I hated it at first but now, not only do I enjoy it, I can't do without the original voices (even if I don't understand a thing). It gives colours to the movie.

Oh man, don't get me started on remakes! I too hate to see Hollywood appropriate itself of great foreign movies. To me, The Ring and Dark Water were so much more efficient in their original format! And by the way, A tale of Two Sisters is on my To See List. I love asian horror movies. Have you ever seen the Guinea Pig series from Japan? I think they're the most gory movies to ever grace my eyes.

And City of God (Ciudad de Dios), what a great but hard hitting movie! I loved it too.

Keep the suggestions going!

I had never heard of those films until you said. I went to check them out and they look a bit full on for me. It sounds like you would get a kick out of any films by Takashi Miike like Audition, Dead or Alive or the truly insane Ichi the Killer.

There is a French film called Satan (Sheitan) which I would go for if you are in the mood for something truly mindbending (in a good way).

I enjoy movies from Japan (the old Kurasawa films like Yojimbo, Seven Samurai, etc), as well as some of the contemporary horror/thriller movies mentioned above. I don't think anyone mentioned Versus, yet, which was terrific!

Some good French movies are Amelie, and City of Lost Children (both by the same director), and Brotherhood of the Wolf was great.

I also like the British "Sharpe" series with Sean Bean.

One of the movies I listed in my first post (Bijitâ Q/Visitor Q) is directed by Takashi Miike and I love how Miike isn't afraid to go over the top to get a message through. Bijitâ Q's ultimate goal is to tell a story about the importance of family unity. But Miike uses images of drug abuse, incest, necrophily, scatology, family violence, humiliation, etc. to tell his tale.

I have not seen any of the movies you mentionned but Audition sounds like a movie I would appreciate. I personally think Takashi Miike is a genious, in is own twisted way. And thanks for the suggestions! I may very well end up renting them.

There's 2 other movies I saw but forgot to list:

-Lat sau san taam (Hard Boiled) - China

-Wo de fu qin mu qin (The Road Home) - China
