I'm sort of the opposite... I tend to lose respect if you haven't done drugs, drinking, or what ever the 3rd one was.

I lost a lot of friends who started doing drugs. It makes me feel like crap. They just ditched me and a few others for a few minutes of good feeling a day. I disrespect their lack of control and ignorance of facts as well as being so easily told what they should do. I used to have a lot of people to hang out with but now all most of those people who used to be friends do is do drugs and talk about it. If they just did them occasionally and could focus on other parts of life i might be able to handle it but their lives revolve around it now. That's basically the reason i came to gamespot, i've lost a lot of my true friends and the ones who aren't busy doing drugs are working all the time.

No, that is their life. Their decisions are none of my business. Now if those choices are affecting me personally, then it becomes my problem......but I am in no position to hold a feeling of self righteousness towards my friends.

I can't hold my friends to my moral standards, and don't expect them to live up to mine. That's why I seek out friends with common values.

Only if it wasn't done in moderation. Oh and it also depends on the drugs. If it's hard drugs then yes.

Yes, I lose respect for people when I find out they do drugs or other illegal activities, etc. Luckily, I surround myself with good friends so I don't have to worry about these kinds of problems.

Drinking: No unless it was serious
Smoking: No, their choice.
Drugs: A bit concerned if they were smoking dope, but not too worried. If they were using needle drugs and shooting up on a regular basis, then I would be extremely worried, and I would help them, not lose respect.

What kind of question is that? As if there's no grey area? What leads you to have such a predisposition anyway? Drugs such as nicotine and THC don't change a person's character, so why should it be of any consequence? Other drugs, from alcohol to heroin, are different. Some people drink socially and sparingly, while others abuse alcohol and lose control of their ego, humility, and social aptitude. If your friend begins to use/develop a dependency on heroin, meth, alcohol, pharmaceuticals, etc. you should attempt to show compassion, understanding, and a commitment to helping them, rather than ignoring, criticizing, or altering the way you inherently feel about them. There are exceptions, of course. Some people really DO experiment with drugs once or twice in their life, and sometimes that is the case.

Dope just means any (illegal usually) drug.

I don't really respect anyone who holds an irrational stigma about such things.

I wouldn't lose respect for someone for something they did in the past. If I knew someone who was currently abusing drugs (illegal ones like heroin or meth for example) I would most likely try to help them out. I'm not the type to sit around and watch as someone destroys their life.

Not all drugs are the same. Hallucinogenics like Peyote and LSD are cool. Drugs like Alcohol, Cocain and Heroin are definitely not cool.

It makes perfect sense to lose respect for people who abuse illegal substances. First, it can be seen as a moral failing. Secondly, such debauchery suggests a hedonistic lifestyle- one that could be likened to animals. I always think of Aldous Huxley's "Brave New World" when this question arises. Even in a society where these substances are legal, and used by the majority of society, there is failing inherent in their use. Instead of pursuing some form of self-actualization many people are content to with the more base and cheap pleasures.

1: What is unethical about using drugs to alter your consciousness? A cup of Tea or a can of Cola contains Caffine. Nutmeg is an deliriant class hallucinogenic. Drugs such as Peyote can be used to achieve a state of spiritual awakening.

2: Whats wrong with Hedonism?

Yes, I lose respect for people when I find out they do drugs or other illegal activities, etc. Luckily, I surround myself with good friends so I don't have to worry about these kinds of problems.guitarman89

And...they're good friends because they don't use drugs?

Which then justifies you ditching them if they ever start using drugs, on the basis that they are no longer "good friends"?

Have you ever considered that maybe YOU aren't a good friend?

That reasoning is absurd. I always have difficulty understanding why people believe they should preserve a relationship that has deteriorated, especially when someone willingly begins to use drugs/cigarettes/alcohol. Why should it be my responsibility to attempt to bring them back from a handicap that they have willingly walked into? I surround myself with people who wouldn't so actively degrade themselves.

YOU are the one who deteriorated the relationship.

YOU are the one who dumped thewm because they drink beer.

They aren't stealing your stuff, they aren't screwing things up for you, they just like beer.

That's all.

And yet, you're willing to throw away a "friendship" on the principle that you won't be friends with people who use drugs, when their drug use isn't hurting anyone else one bit.

Don't blame THEM for the friendship deteriorating. They had NOTHING to do with that. That was all YOUR doing, because you value your image more than you value your friends.

"Oh no! People might think less of me because I have a friend who uses drugs!"

Yeah, WTFever.

Someone I know had a 16 page essay due the following morning (it was like 9 pm or so) he managed to get it all done and even clean his whole house that night thanks to the drug. I believe he got a B+ on it as well (this was a 300 level course).

Drugs: A bit concerned if they were smoking dope, but not too worried. If they were using needle drugs and shooting up on a regular basis, then I would be extremely worried, and I would help them, not lose respect.AndrewSuh

by "dope" you mean?

I'm pretty sure it's just another way of saying pot, which is just another slang term methinks.

when i hear the word dope, it's usually in reference to brown or tweak. the last time i heard it referenced for pot was probably the dare program back in elementary school.

Where I'm from, dope is tweak.

I lose respect for anyone who uses meth. Too many of my possesions have been stolen by **** tweakers.

yeah, tweak is a hell of a drug. but man, it's ridiculous the amount of things you can accomplish on it.

Seriously, tweakers may be souless, but god damn their effecient.

no kidding. can you imaging using 38% of your brain, instead of the normal 10%, all the time? if only there was a way to do that without having to use that nonsense.

The notion that people only use 10% of their brain is a myth...
