I mean if the area you're parked in isn't totally flat, but a little bit downhill at an angle? I heard that you should always put the parking brake on unless you're on level ground, because it will stress out the other brakes or something if you don't.

I never put on my parking brake. I do turn my wheels away if I'm on a hill though.

Only if I'm parked on a hill. Otherwise I just leave the car in park.

I always leave my handbrakes on when I park, even on a flat surface. I don't want some thief stealing my car by just pushing it.

Yes, because I drive a manual and the car will roll away if it's in neutral.

I always put the handbrake on, hill or not. I cringe whenever I'm with someone and they park on an incline and don't use the handbrake. Car lurches forward an inch or two and all that weight goes to the transmission. Awful, awful habit. :(

if youre driving a manual its good to leave it on always. if you're driving an automatic its not necessary unless you're parked on an angle because it puts a lot of stress on the transmission.

I do it because it's a good habit. Reminds me to always use it. But technically, if you're in a parking lot and someone bumps your car, the handbrake being set could be what prevents your car from bumping the car in front of it (or behind it, depending on where your car was bumped). So less damage to repair... in that somewhat unlikely scenario.

Well I always put the car in park when i'm not in it :) However, I don't put on my E-brake very often (it is on the right side of the drivers seat).

I was taught in driving school and by my parents to use the handbrake ALWAYS.

Even if I could be convinced this is false, I am so stuck in my ways by now that I'd probably still use the handbrake on flat surfaces.

If someone hits your car hard enough to move it, even though it's in Park, I don't see how the parking brake is going to make a difference.

It doesn't take much to move a car in park. The only stopping force is provided by the transmission, and there's some leeway in the car's movement. If someone bumps your car, it's not going to take off, obviously, but it can move a few inches forward or back. If another car is in that range, your car will hit it. Handbrake engages the rear brakes which obviously presents another obstacle in moving the car.

Plus, why risk the damage to the transmission?

It wont take that much force to move it. Without the break I could push a car with enough force to damage another car. As well as that what is stopping someone from pushing your car down the road?

Maybe. You guys are setting up scenarios that I would just resolve by telling my insurance company all the damage was caused by a hit and run, and if the person who caused the crash didn't run, they'd be on the hook for all the damage anyway.

With your transmission in park, the car isn't going anywhere past a few inches of it's current position. It'd have to be in neutral to move it any significant distance. But it's those few inches that matter.

You'd still be responsible for the damage that your car caused to the one next to it. And even if you could just get your insurance company to cover that too (there would be price hikes involved), why not just forgo the chance of it happening and simply take two seconds to set the handbrake?

Stupid ppl do stupid thangs.

Especially when beer is involved. Ive never been in an automatic so I didnt realise there was a park I thought park was neutral so you would need the handbrake on. You learn something new every day.

Its intriguing why Automatic transmission is so prevalent in the United States. Ive driven about 3 Automatic Cars and about 8 Normal Gear Stick Cars i must admit i prefer the Stick by a long way.

Back when i had a stick i didnt use it then either. I just hopped out and threw it in gear. A small part of me was always hoping it would accidently get knocked into neutral and roll into the river.
