Well first, it doesn't really matter what it was. If we believe a man can raise from the dead... how is a talking snake any more radical? But anyways, it wasn't really a snake. It was a serpent like creature and it was before God cursed it to the ground so it probably had wings or feet. It was supposedly one of the most beautiful majestic looking creatures ever which was how it was so easy for it to tempt Eve.

I personally dislike the choice of a snake to represent the devil. Snakes are amazing and fascinating animals and I an perplexed at how one can connote "evil."
