For living on residence. People always tell me I should be getting one, but I don't see the point. Is there anything wrong with just bringing your desktop to residence? What are your experiences with this at college/univeristy? Is it worth to invest in one or just bring your desktop?

A computer is a computer. You don't need to have a laptop at all unless you wanna write notes on it in lectures which is SO annoying, I hated people click clacking on their keyboards when I was trying to listen.

Personally, I got a laptop, but I also know exactly how small the desk in my dorm is.

It depends on whether you'll need to use a computer on campus at all. If not, then it doesn't matter.

TC, do so at your peril. Desktops aren't nearly as effective as laptops
at being a simultaneous status symbol and fashion accessory, which is vital in a college environment.
That's strange :? But yes you can have your desktop. I prefer the laptop because I tend to write my essays in non-conventional places.

As long as you have a computer, regardless of if it's a desktop or a laptop, you should be fine.

Both though are highly recommended

Depends on transport, course, accommodation ect. The vast majority of people who bring laptops to class at my uni are Mac users showing off their Macbook whilst they surf facebook. TBH the way smart phones are going these days it seems a bit pointless getting a laptop just for taking digital notes in class.

I'm horrible at organizing my notes when writing on paper, and I tend to lose them too....so I started to take notes on my macbook. Plus now that steam is available on MAC I can play games too.

If you have a desktop in your residence, and you can take notes by hand, then no, you really don't need one.

Do you drive into the middle of nowhere (peferably a field) and write them late at night?

Responding to the above posts, I tried taking digital notes my first semester of college..worst idea ever. It's not the same as writing notes down on a notebook. Not only that, but I found myself distracted with games, FB, etc..

To the OP though, I would still highly recommend a laptop. Although I didn't use it for taking notes in classes, I still took it everywhere and it was useful for pulling up online notes, or checking things through ANGEL (or whatever program your college uses for organizing classes online). Also, like mrmusicman said, it's also helpful if you want to go to a library/coffee shop/etc.. to study or write a paper...(Or get distracted..:P).

It's easy for me to stay awake if I have had enough sleep. Paying attention is another story, though, and I don't think a laptop would help with that...

Yeah. That's on top of the $3000 per semester tuition.

Luckily I started the programme last year, so I'm not part of that.

Nothing against it but think about your roommate if you have one. But I guess the thing is everyone wants to take notes on their laptop or take it to the library to study/type papers and such. I didn't take a desktop because it eliminates my full desk space.

Pen Tablet + desktop is more ideal than a laptop + desktop imo.

Laptops can be great assuming that you take classes where lectures can be summarized in a brick of text combined with the given supplementary materials. If a lot of diagrams/free-hand work get thrown around, then a pen tablet + One Note is a much better combo.

Why not both? For about 3 years I didn't have space nor make space for a desktop. Since I started college I have gone through 3 laptops and 1 desktop. But only this past year did I have a desktop.

Its awesome to have for some things but if i want to go to the library or anywhere else really and need a puter. A laptop is crucial.

Well it helped me a whole lot. For the classes I didn't have to always draw diagrams, it was so much easier to type notes. That, and I had instant access to all the power points, class links/sites, and subscription based notes no matter where I was.

Forgot to mention I'm taking computer science as well. I just remembered too, I love using Microsoft OneNote, so I can see how that'd actually be useful because you can organize them well and search for things easy which is miles better than looking through written notes. Damn, I didn't want to get a laptop but I can actually see it's usefullness now. Perhaps I will just get a netbook or something that will run it.

im honeslty not considering getting one as good ol fashion paper and pencil for taking notes seems perfectly reasonable to me. As well as this, I can go to one of the many computer labson campus to do any writings. However, i may invest in a low end laptop just cause itll make life a tad bit easier.

I'm taking Comp Sci and the Macbook show offs (who for some reason all seem to be doing web design) and foreign students are the only people with full laptops. A few people have netbooks but they're still in the minority. Most people just download the notes as they need them.

I don't see the need to bring one to class, though just depends on what your campus routine is, if you're going to hit up the libraries after class sometimes having a laptop with you (even if you don't use it for class) is useful if you want to maybe bring them to the library for homework, or taken them to internet cafes maybe to do your studying outside of campus, as often the library computers were taken over by people not even using them for academic purposes, most the time almost all the people in the libraries when I was at the university used the library computers for MySpace and FaceBook crap.

That is the dumbest thing I have ever seen. As any professor will tell you, students rarely ever take note on their laptops in class. In grad school its different, but in undergrad nearly all students with a laptop in class are using it to go on facebook, chat, play games, and maybe occasionally type down a sentence of notes. Hence why a lot of professors ban laptops, especially in the sciences (where a laptop would not only be pointless but a hindrance; you can't quickly jot down molecular structures and graphs in MS Word).

No. Well a notebook/laptop specifically no, but a computer in general... probably a good idea. I had to use the campus computer labs my first year in college for like a 1 to 2 week period, and it kind of sucked... you had to keep everything on zip drives or I guess usb thumb/jump-drives( were the new thing then). Plus you always had to schedule your studying around the hours of the labs and usage of the labs... it sucked when you had something to print out or whatever and someone was just sitting on the computer chatting. I mean I get they are for public use, but during peak usage, I would expect people have some common courtesies. Anyways, you will want your own computer of some kind, but you don't have to buy a new ones. A computer with at least Windows XP/OSX, an Ethernet Port and then an office suite of some type will be a good start.

I like bringing my laptop to the library because I can focus more there.
