Just last night, I heard that Paris Hilton got out of jail after only 3 days, when she was intended to stay 2 weeks, because of a "medical condition". I then realised that any celebrity can get that done, and thus made me realise how much democracy can be exploited.

Other cases are like in legal situations, when some people can win millions of dollars in "damages" if the smallest thing happens to them. I saw in the film "Super Size Me" that some girls in America sued Mc Donald's for millions for "making them fat"!

Also, when it comes to free speech, people go too far sometimes. Some people can preach hate, or just spend their time talking about anything shocking for "shock value". I'm tired of it. Democracy's founding fathers must really be turning in their graves.

I think that mankind generally takes democracy and freedom for granted.

What do you think?

It's messed up in the exploitation, but the idea is great.

Once you stop all this rent a crowd rubbish with riots and what not at summits, and celebrities getting equal treatment in everything...then...only then is democracy ideal and no longer messed up.

Well, It's pretty messed up in America...with the two party system and all that....It works great if you see it as a whole and if you compare it to other ideologies.

True democracy is unattainable on a large scale.  The US has a representative democracy.  The faults you are describing have more to do with the legal and socioeconomic systems than the form of government.

Well, since the legal system is the most exploited aspect of it, the legal system in particular, but also general democracy exploitation.

Because I think the ideology of it is great, but like all other forms of government systems it has it's drawbacks.

I was just looking for clarifycation so yeah thanks. It just wasen't entirely clear when your title of the thread says one thing then you were ranting about another. I do agree with you somewhat I think...:P The legal system isen't in the best shape..but rather then just bash it do you think there is anything that can be done to save it from spiralling into an even more laughable system? And most countries may say they are democratic and in the way they elect their leaders they may be but in reality once the leaders are elected it is not really the people running things anymore therefore no longer much of a democracy. If someone ends up responding to this and I don't respond back it's cause I am off for the day:P...

Well, I'm talking about countries that are self-proclaimed "democratic".

And yes, true democracy doesn't really exist, but "real democracy" (complete people power), would be......anarchy.

"Real" democracy isn't anarchy, its the system of the ancient Greeks like Plato.  But your right when you say it can't exist on a large scale because it requires the participation of all citizens in the process of government.

As a point of interest, How many of you of voting age plan to vote next year?

Technically, America isn't a Democracy, but a Republic. But it's turning into one, what with every protest and "He hurt my feelings!" putting the citizens in charge. . . .

Your first two arguments are against the legal system...not democracy.

As for free speech...it only works if everyone is allowed free speech.  You are advocating censoring ideas you don't agree with.

There is a huge difference between a flawed legal system and a democratic government, anyway i think democracy is fantastic, and there is a theory out there that if every country in the world was democratic there would never be a need for war, and it actually makes some sense

No, it's a neat idea. It gives people more say in what their government does. But with every type of government the system can become corrupt.

It's human nature rather then any of the systems that's messed up. There is always going to be people who enjoying killing, exploiting, stealing, looking down on others ect. As well as people who think there beliefs are superior and want other people to share those beliefs.

the argument goes pretty deep, but depending on your definition of democracy you could say that minus civil wars, 2 truly democratic countries have never gone to war against each other

democracy is messed up the way it is today because in the post cold war era people believe in the negative liberty in which people is free to choose from a set of option that the government gave them. If we have positive democracy, u can do whatever u like then probably it wont be that bad

Communism and dictatorship is independent, one thing doesn't bring the other. True the economy is centrally plan but the government that plan it is the people, its not a representative of the people but the mss in itself. Through community meeting and such communism can be more democratic than capitalism. in fact, There are more capitalist dictators than communist dictators.

To be honest, if there was no government some mob or gang boss would organize a large group of people into an armed force and just set up a dictatorship.
