Do you think people that create music actually hear it in their heads?

Like schizophrenia? Or do they just have a better knack for rythem and knowing what sounds best with what? Michael Jackson has stated that he takes no credit for the music that he's created, and has stated it's just come to him out of the blue.

What do you guys think?

Some people have it naturally, it's different in many cases, music has so many areas to specialise in, I'm good at playing, but I really suck at making things up or improvising, but I can also read it very well. Its good to be natural, but it isn't a need to be able to be a competent musician.

it is a skill that you develop. its like playing a certain game for a while and pretty soon it becomes second nature on some of the things you are doing. i have been playing in jazz for many years, and as i feel the rhythm and the rootchords (from the base guitar and piano) i know what to play when doing improvisation.

people who are around music A LOT get better at it.

edit: and of course some people are just more talented. like with sports, smarts, etc.

New music ideas, beats and melodies come into my head every hour of every day...I'm constantly thinking of new stuff and even beatboxing to them.

People in this conversation seem to say it happens, so I'm guessing it does

I'm a drummer, and usually melodies are not what I hear. I let my guitarist or whoever come up with a melody, and once I have the base, I can hear where the notes need to be changed to make it perfect.

But as far as drums go, yes...as soon as I hear a melody I can immediately hear which rhythm is supposed to be played to it, and which beat, which note combinations, fills, which pieces I should hit where, etc. It happens when you've been playing for a long time, and when you've written a lot of music.

That's exactly how it goes for me...I've never had a musical lesson in my life.I've just been self-teaching myself all my life...and it just comes natural to me...everything music-wise does.
