There have probably been a lot of topics about this, but I haven't seen any. I wonder what peoples opinions are on whether prop 19 will pass in California, making marijuana legal to a certain extant. I don't want responses to get too opinionated so please don't argue about marijuana itself. I want to hear good arguments as to why you think it will or won't pass.

First I need an answer. Are most Californians potheads? Just a simple yes or no.

That is kind of a complex question. What do you consider a pothead, what would you classify as most Californians?

I think it will. The last polls I showed show that live-call polls show it about even, while robo-call polls show it passing by high single-digit/low double-digit margins. The implication of course is that people don't want to say they will vote for it because they don't want to be accused of just voting for it because they smoke, but with the anonymity of the ballot box, they will support it.

Pothead as in, smokes a lot of pot and when you see them, you go, "I bet that guy's voting for proposition 19." because that's the first thing to come to mind. Most Californians as in...Most Californians.

Yes. And it should.

The entire drug prohibition is just a fascist power-trip our governments went on a while ago.

That makes a lot of sense. I want it to pass, but Californians couldn't even get the same sex marriage vote to pass so it will be interesting.

Maybe.Would be cool.

Hell,here's another fun fact.

There was some dude that said (in 1984,I think) that marijuana can turn you into a homosexual and what would follow was more people getting Aids.

Ha ha...

I think that depends on who's voting. But I do think it will pass, there's enough people for it to get it passed.

To be fair, same sex marriage is a much more controversial issue than marijuana legalization. California hasn't seen the same kind of opposition campaign for Prop 19 as it saw in support of Prop 8.

I think it will be very very close. There is a lot of money in it for the state, so I'm sure the politicians hope it passes regardless of what they're saying in public. Its also good to keep Big Brother off our backs.

Well, Prop 8 only passed because the LDS church forced members to donate to it, or else face excommunication.

Prop 19 has no such challenges.

True, marijuana legalization won't have religious protesters (I think), and it is a different issue.

Marijuana in California is pretty much legal as it stands, with or without Proposition 19. Just take a walk across a beach and you'll see.

If it does pass, the federal government had better file a lawsuit against California.

That would really say something interesting if the federal government prosecutes a state for wanting to enforce immigration laws but lets another state off scot free that legalizes pot.

I've heard the size of the predicted revenue stream is questionable, but I guess any extra income for the state would be welcome.

I wish people would understand that it simply DOES NOT MATTER if it passes or not; the legalization of cannabis is a FEDERAL issue; i.e., if a state legalizes it when the government says it cannot be legalized, the government wins. It's been that way for nearly two-hundred years. Proposition 19 is not that big of an issue.

The federal government won't need to file a lawsuit against California; the basis for the lawsuit against Arizona was Constitutionality, and this law in California has nothing to do with anything currently in the Constitution.

Its not just the revenue stream, but the money saved on not policing and imprisoning users/dealers. Not to mention the dramatic drop in general crime associated with an illegal distribution network.

I highly doubt that Proposition 19 will cause an uproar like that. Whether it passes or not, it'll turn out to be relatively insignificant in the end anyway. Don't start stressing yet. ;)
