Do you think rap is better now then it was 5-7 years ago?

Rap sucks for a long period now. After Tupac, Eminem it had started to decline imo.

5-7 years ago, rap artists used to able to make music that related with people or was fun to dance, hang, and rap along to. Today the rappers don't relate to people the same way. It's mostly about bragging rights and what they can make people do now. Example, rappers today are either beefing with another rapper because he said his mom was fat, or is rapping about how much "bank" he makes, how he started from the worst place in existance and is now a huge name in the media etc etc. Back in the day rap was fun, now it's just generic teen music. Same with Rock and Heavy Metal.

Like King Of Rock by Run DMC, its fun music:

Rap was in its heyday during the 90s when rappers had somethin to say, modern rap (with a handfull of exceptions X Raided for example) is sh1t, all these new mc's talk about is what chain they've got, riding on these rims, living in this house etc blah blah blah:roll:.

Where's the commentaries on the state of the world and society and the problems we all face?

Kids these days think lil wayne is the paragon of hip hop i just want beat them all:evil:

This is like asking if having a turd in your oatmeal now, is better than having a turd in your oatmeal 7 years ago. It sucks now, it sucked then.

Because of a single person rap is still good? Even if Kendrick is good, the other 99.9% of rappers suck. And technically Kendrick is no where near as good Tupac or Biggie, or old school Bone Thugs, or WuTang, or NWA or all those amazing people, so yes, I would say rap is in decline.

TC asks about hip-hop from 5-7 years ago. Most people talk about the Golden age which is nearly 20 years ago. smh. To answer the TC, yes I think it is a bit better. As JML said some people are taking the genre in a different direction. Others are coming hungry and paying homage to previous era's. Kendrick, Mill, Pro-Era, Kanye, Run The Jewels, etc. A lot of great stuff going on in the rap game right now.

If you are talking staright lyrics then yes, its better. Rappers a writing better then 5-7 years.

But from a production point of view no. Beats and melodies used to be more simple but were more enjoyable. Beats now are either very slow or sounds like house music. Also while I like the bass increase of recent years a lot of rappers are getting drowned out by the bass.

I think it's better, nothing memorable was really happening 5-7 years ago. Actually that's a lie, there were some great albums, but few and far between. Hip Hop didn't really have an identity, the East coast was falling off the map at that time and songs like "Laffy Taffy", "Grillz", and "Lean wit it, Rock wit It" were pushed to the front and center; Lyricist are beginning to take over the reins again.

No. I didn't think it was possible, its getting progressively worse. There are a handful of good rappers, but they are definitely outnumbered and being drowned out by the bad ones...

The radio will always play crap, but the rappers that are on there now are definitely better than what was mainstream 5-7 years ago. Just look up who was on the charts at that time and it's pretty shocking (Dem Franchize Boyz, D4L, etc), but of course that's assuming you really take an interest in Hip Hop to begin with.

Speaking shitty dance+ringtone rap songs.

I remember when kids under the age of 13 would name themselves "souljaboi95" or something like that in MP games. Then they moved onto "xXGhostXx" and "CaptainPrice96".

Now it's "xXxMlGpro420smokeWizkahlifia360nosc0pesDrizzy01xXx"

If you listen to what's playing on the radio, then yes, you'll probably say that it's getting progressively worse. However, if you actually take some time and listen to non mainstream artists, then you'll find a lot of good quality music. But with that said, 90s era hip hop > all.
