I think the concept of subliminal messages, whether in music or on the TV, is exceptionally silly. However, I don't know if my opinion is shared with everyone else, because I've never been a "masses" type people. Even if it means being an outcast, I'd rather be caught dead then let others influence my decision on what to wear, what to eat, how to talk and act. People with no individuality like that will receive no respect at all.

But do you think you can be brainwashed into I don't know, buying more popcorn or purchasing more items from one brand then another? Like there's ever been any proof on this subject...

I don't think that they actually work most of the time. I'm sure they do sometimes, but definitely not that often.

Wow, I can't believe people still think subliminal messages work. No, they don't; subliminal messages are nothing more than a pop culture magic trick that don't work. You aren't going to start worshipping Satan from playing rock music and you're not going to go out and buy more Coke in a movie theatre if they play one in their movies.

It depends on how obscure it is. If the message is hidden so well it's hard to see when looking right at it, then I don't think that's going to work, however, I tend to remember the messages that are a little more obvious (but not so obvious it's hard to miss).

It's subconscious... ie. You can't really say "I think it wouldn't influence me"

Subliminal messages can work, but all they really do is influence your mood. They can't make you buy a specific product.

Furthermore, the effect a message has is directly proportional to how long you experience it (at least in short time frames). Which means a supraliminal (consciously perceived) advertisement for Coca-Cola is more effective at getting people to buy soda than a subliminal ad for the same product.

Hypnosis is supposed to be subconscious too, but if you don't believe hypnosis will work on you then it most likely won't.

Likewise, being aware of subliminal priming usually tends to ruin the effect.

I'm quite sure there is some truth in subliminal messaging, though I'm not sure it's something so direct that you will really notice it. There's little doubt that advertising agencies have put them to use countless times and just look at the rediculous CRAP that people buy day-in day-out.

Nope. I don't think so since I have seen some studies that prove it to be ineffective.

I think they don't affect anyone, but I've heard from my cousin who was a smoker, that after listening to subliminal music that helps stopping his smoking crave that it had affected him and helped him cutting down on his habit. So I think it would affect you when you willingly go for it, not when you are watching some advertisement or listening to a music with the intent to just enjoy it :x. Who knows it might just be a placebo..

I'm sorry but you would have to be incredibly naive to believe in subliminal messages. Oh, by the way, has anyone got the new Kanye West CD? I'm going out to Target to buy it now.

yeah.. i'd say ask a psychologist, but i do think they exist. the mind is easily tricked by it's own methods of thought. for example, an optical illusion would operate on the same principle as subliminal messages

EDIT: to all the people saying they clearly don't work, i mean of course if the guy is holding a coke in the movie doesn't mean everyone is going to immediately stop drinking pepsi, but it will work to an extent.
