Helped bring 3D platforming into mainstream gaming... not really one of my favourites. Great game. I prefer my Mario in 2D... just like my platforming.
It was my very first game for my very first console.......so naturally it seems like one of the best games I've ever played.....along with several other N64 games.
It was crap, and Galaxy will follow along in its trails. But, this is coming from a guy that hates every mario game except for the Super Mario RPG. I also favor Majora's Mask over every other Zelda game.
It's one of the best because it defined 3D platforming as we know it. We would most likely be going about platforming with a different approach if not for SM64.
