with gas going up, people are finding ways to use a lot less gas. on yahoo it says that a lot of people are moving closer to jobs/family/ect. people are taking bikes, motorcycles and scooters to work because they take no/little gas (the scooter store in my town has a sign saying 90MPG). wich is also in a way hurting the car companies.

do you think, in short term, or long run, that oil companies are screwing themselves over? or are they maybe forcing us to find an alternate form of fuel.

thats an interesting arguement that was already in another thread earlier today. anyways imo oil prices will stay high and cars that use a lot of gas will keep being produced as long as there are lobbyists.

They will in the long term, which is probably why they said F it we're raising prices and milking it as long as we can.

the car companies want to adopt something similar to brazil. and the technology is just waiting to be used. but the oil companies arent allowing new fuels to be used at gas pumps.

our car industry is being held hostage.

I don't think they care a ton about the long term, since they aren't going to have much of any oil left to sell in the long term anyway.

would be cool to get cars that run on carbon dioxide and then made the dioxide into oxygen...

then pretty much all of our problems would be gone

It can be done. I'm no chemist but surely there is a way to seperate the carbon from the oxygen. The carbon "waste" could then be recycled.

Of course you can. Plants do it naturally. The trick is that you need to apply energy to break the bounds. This doesn't really make useful as a fuel source.

They don't set the price of crude oil, but they most certainly set the price of their processed products.

Of course not, China, India are huge countries that are booming with the demand of oil.. And regular citizen consumers arn't the only people that require oil.. Nor is oil solely for automobiles..

and profit maybe 10% on that price? which is pretty low compared to companies like goog or microsoft whose profits are in the 20-30% range.. yet no one is screaming for a windfall profit tax on google....

Quite the opposite. Crude oil's price has increased five-fold over the last decade, while the price of gas has barely doubled over the same period. Hmmm... maybe the oil companies aren't as evil as we like to think?

Oil companies sell to A LOT more sources than just the gas stations. You paying $4+ at the tank isn't making them record profits..

Ultimately, No. They'll be the leading companies of "alternative" energy IMO. Companies like ExxonMobile have WAYYYYY too much invested in the future of their business not to have contingency plans for skyrocketing fuel prices.

Conversely, does anyone truly believe our high cost of fuel is truly just "The Oil Companies Fault!!!"? I think the way people answer this question will say a lot about what they do or do not understand about economics and our current abysmal politicians in Washington.

THANK YOU COMP! Finally, another voice of pointing out the Hypocrisy of Windfall Profits Taxation....funny how "environmentalists" like Gore love bashing the oil industry, but then NEVER mention the 80% profit range on the Hedge Funds they own. Me thinks I smell a rat.

They havent, yet. People are suckers, we keep bending over and gumping down the overpriced gas. I am for it though, this encourages innovation and this will end up creating real alternatives to gas. Hopefully soon, Automakers will get the picture: We don't care about SUV's, Gas-Gussling trucks, or even hybrids, we just want an alternative to fuels, we want to stop being slaves to the Saudi's. I can't wait for the Electric Car to be resurrected.

On a side note, I see these commercials all the time about Exxon and BP investing in alternaive methods of energy. These ads disgust me, anyone who actually falls for this crap it a pathetic fool. These guys make billions playing the American driver like a puppet, why do you think they really want to shift their profits to other resources?

Electric cars at present don't solve anything. Since most of the world's electricity is still produced by the burning of fossil fuels.
