If so, that's pretty boring.

When we eventually meet the aliens, I'm gonna be pretty ****ing disappointed if they just look like us. That's lame as hell. I want the aliens to look like Cthulhu or like The Thing or like the Aliens.

If the universe is infinite, and infinite possibilities can occur, one would think so.

I really doubt that. Unless you're an alien.

coolbeans90

Actually, indications are that the universe is NOT infinite.

And even if the universe were infinitely large, then it still doesn't follow that there are infinite possibilities. To put it another way, imagine an infinitely large ocean. You're not ever going to find that infinitely large ocean populated by desert creatures.

Nope. I think the only two outcomes would be they destroy us and take our resources, or they enslave us and take our resources.

No, I don't think so.. seems reasonable that if alien life is visiting earth they'd be able to disguises themselves. That's a much more practical solution to the idea your presenting.. I don't believe it's likely at all that alien life would look anything like what has developed on earth and would be rather foolish to make that assumption.

It would be foolish to make any assumption when it comes to extra terrestrials. We have no idea whether they would look like us or whether they wouldn't.

I don't think the ocean analogy is sound, if we're talking (assuming) about a infinite universe. An ocean is just an ocean. It has certain qualities that only species that have specifically adapted to those qualities can live in. But when you're talking about (again assuming there is) an infinite universe, we don't have just oceans, or just deserts. We have entire planets, and each planet could theoretically hold any kind of species. Just look at how different the planets are in our solar system. We have species that couldn't survive on Mercury, or Mars. With an infinte universe, we could have any form of planet, and therefore any kind of species.

This is more of a question regarding your analogy than a rebuttal, really.

You haven't taken into account the laws of physics. Everything everywhere will have to obey the laws of physics, and that's going to be a limiting factor in what kind of life can exist.

Well it's unlikely that there are a lot of species throughout the universe that have a (potentially) strong understanding of technology. So, if this is the case, couldn't it still be possible (despite how high or low the chances are) that they would want to learn about our civilization? I mean learn in a sense that they would want to know about human civilization out of curiosity, not educational purposes.
