It should be a harsh punishment. It's unacceptable.

1 time, short jail sentence. 2nd time, you're locked up 10-15. If you kill someone, you should be charged with manslaughted/vehicular homicide, and through away the key.

Yeah....we should also ask a serious question: "Why do we use a vehicle generally at least a ton in weight to carry a person under 200 pounds?"

You know, you could surely make an equally emotionally-charged picture about how speeding is bad.

Not to say that speeding is as bad as drunk driving, but I personally tend to stop caring as soon as people try to horrify me with shocking pictures.

It's a cheap tactic, and I'm not willing to discuss the issue unless the person giving me a lecture actually wants a discussion. Gore-pictures are the equivalent of calling people nazis, and I don't play that. Give me a well-reasoned argument for why punishments for drunk driving should be increased, then I'll take my time to consider your argument. But when you thow pictures of burn victims, aborted fetuses, and blackened lungs at me, I just don't waste my time discussing it with you.

I'm being serious here.

Why can't we develop lighter, more efficient, and more compact vehicles to get from point A to point B?

There are SUVs all over the place that weight easily 4 kilos, but what's the point? More room? Bah. Efficiency is what upgrading is all about....not this garbage-http://www.myetv.org/katrina/images/day6/suvs-gas.jpg

I don't know, since I don't know the laws in the US.. In Sweden, the punishment for driving drunk is pretty harsh. It's a serious crime, though, so it should be.

I agree 100000% It is inexcusable to drive drunk, especially if you are involved in an accident where someone is injured or dies.

I don't think a smaller, lighter car will help. Even a small weight will kill if it's going fast enough.

No, I think you should be able to drive drunk. If you hurt someone else or thier property you should be held 100% responsible.

If they have pictures like that to advertise the dangers of drunk driving, then why don't they just show some deformed face and tell you about the dangers of a zippo lighter?

Cars are generally terrifically dangerous though. Screw convenience like that, I'd rather not have thousands of people being destroyed daily by it.

I heard that drunk driving in Russia gets you the death penalty. BTW I don't drive, I'm too scared of accidentally running over a child or even a cat.

Here's an idea...for starters, they should get rid of a legal limit. Because the way it is now, it's legal to go out and have a beer, and then drive home.

That leads to people messing around with alcohol, and getting drunker than they think they are.

Best thing to do for starters is to get rid of the legal limit entirely. Make it so that having ANY alcohol in your blood has the same punishment as being absolutely ****faced.

Not a bad idea but a lot of people would get in jail and it would be difficult to enfore if they weren't completely drunk.

Yes, definitely. Every week you hear stories of Hollywood celebrities doing it and they seldom get more than a slap on the fingers. Drunk driving is extremely irresponsible, it endangers everyone around you and can easily end in tragedy.. so yes, definitely, penalties should be made harsher.

I think the government or some someone should start a business that is used basically to drive drunks home.  The people go in the bar and tell the bartender or someone that they are going to need a ride home at the end.  The bartender then presses a button or something and a cab comes to drive them home.

They pay the bartender for teh cab though.

I think the punishments are pretty severe right now.  What about people on cell phones or those that eat or change the radio station?  They also have a higher rate of accidents and deaths - should we penalize them more?

no, if anything it should be replaced with some form of rehibilitation
