i was just wondering, do u think that humanity will further evolve?... (for example, we'll grow bigger brains, gills, wings, or extra arms etc)

or do u think we've reached the peak of evolution... therefore, we can longer evolve... man will stay the same thru out the next million (or billion) years...

Organisms evolve to suit they're habitat. Unless all the land disappears and the earth is just water, we won't grow gills or something like that

No, because there is evolution. There cannot be evolution without more evolution.

There's no such thing as halted evolution. We may not see minute difference like in the alligator. I'm not a scientist, but I see no logical reason as to why any organism will suddenly stop evolving. We will always adapt to any changes in the environment.

Evolution is THEORY not scientific fact, we have seen adaptations but everything adapts, I want to see proof that one species has turned into an entirely different species. I did not descend from a monkey!

Well, the smaller the animal, the faster it goes, since they reproduce faster. We've seen it in insects and bacterii.

Evolution can't be observed in the lifespan of a living organism,it takes millions of year in order to be observed.Of course there are changes. For example nowadays most of the babies can keep their head in a horizontal position,in the past they couldn't until they grew a little older. That is because a bone that we have at the base of our neck is more stable at the birth of a child(it's the same bone that keeps our head steady while we're running and it doesn't go up an down like a pidgeon,i don't know it's name I'm not a doctor) and that is because pregnany women don't endure the difficulties that existed in the past( I am referring the developed world). Also people tend to become taller, less bald and more healthy. But this isn't the result of adaptation to the natural enviroment,it happens because living conditions have gotten much better.

Provided we don't blast ourselves into oblivion first, humans will evolve into a (hopefully) smarter form of being, whilst those who don't keep up will become extinct. It's happened many times before, it'll happen again...

Exactly, evolution would take millions of years to observe, so we have no clue if things have evolved, we have documented adaptation but that is it. And your example is further evidence of adaptation to environment, natural or not. I understand the idea of evolution, but if Darwins idea is correct, which I disagree with, why is it that in terms of biology, the pig is most like a human?

As an answet to psyko7144,i would say that it is almost obvious that humans and apes are extremely close.Even some humans resemble apes a lot(a i mean A lot, hahahaha). It's easy to notice that in some human races(african and native american-latins)the area around the mouth stickes out just like some monkey species. In caucasian people the shape of the skull is  more square-like,like gorillas or smaller species of monkeys.

All species share similarities especially those of the same kind(mammals, birds etc, since we have common ancestors),the fact that pig organs fit almost perfectly in the human organism has something to do with the cell markers which probably are similar in the two organisms and as a result pig organs are less rejected. Also the size fits(a full-grown pig is huge),we couldn't take the heart of a dog or a cat,it would be too small.

First off evolution is not linear so there's no peak, and we (humans) are not the most evolved creatures on the planet (I'm assuming this, cause I don't feel like looking it up).

Do I think humans will evolve? yes (on a microevolutionary scale) it's pretty common for microevolution to occur every 30 generations (jesus was 50 generations ago), and these are slight mutations in genes which cause slight changes like height, skin tone, ect, but the species is able to procreate w/in these variations.

Macroevolution is much much harder to understand since that's where new species come from.  Macroevolution is very hard to prove because it's changes take place over 10000 generations (1/2 a million years) at the soonest.  It also possible for species to never evolve.  Considering we only know about 1 or 2 percent of species that have existed (could be as high as 5% or as low as .05%) it's pretty tough to find those links (it's like putting together a million piece puzzle with 200,000 pieces).

Personally I think humans will be slower to evolve because of their mental ability to change their surroundings with tools also many believe isolation is needed for evolution and humans tend to gene mix fairly frequently.

You probably mean the Sphenoid. That particular bone is pretty much the holy grail for evolution-theorists in terms of the development of our species.

Wait... I'm thinking of at the base of the skull, not the neck.

Here's what will happen.  Man will start to grow fifteen ears, seven of which will be retractable.  We'll then start to sweat Kool-Ade, and from there, we will progress naturally to growing four extra nostrils.  This, of course, will necessitate the need to develop natural nose hair pluckers on the backs of our hands.  Real progress will start to be made once our hair naturally starts growing in skullets.  Our bald pates will become natural reflectors for satellite beams and other transmissions, leading us to become a nation of mullet-sporting psychic rednecks.

And that's just in the next few months.

I personally think that, although evolution may not stop, it may slow down a lot. Because now, rather than adapting to our environment, we try to adapt our environment to suit us. Issues such as "natural selection" don't have the same effect, because of our determination to keep everyone alive, even if nature dictates otherwise (I don't mean this to sound as negative as it does.... I'm not saying that we should close down hospitals and leave people to fend for themselves, just that we do interfere with nature, for better or worse)

Evolution has been at the very least hampered by our development and use of technology

When were pure energy we wont need food, transportation, or anything physical.  We'd still have a consciousness and will become one with the universe.  Im only talking about humans for the moment, not animals.

[QUOTE="dirty_diaz"]i was just wondering, do u think that humanity will further evolve?... (for example, we'll grow bigger brains, gills, wings, or extra arms etc)

or do u think we've reached the peak of evolution... therefore, we can longer evolve... man will stay the same thru out the next million (or billion) years...

Man will stay the same until we all die. Then there will be another superior race

Agreed

Well, you see, eventually, we'll all evolve into floating brains.

If we don't kill ourselves off soon, the first things we'll probably loose are our pinky toes. Then our ability to absorb fat will grow less-efficient as food becomes more available. Our heads will get bigger and our lower body will probably start to wither away.

We are apparently supposed to lose our pinky toe.
