Vista is slow, that's the only big drawback that I can think off (besides some compatibility issues)... but that factor was enough to make me pick XP instead. Seeing as Windows 7 is faster than Vista and the computers that are coming out by it's launch will be faster too... nah, I don't think it will be a flop.Hungry_bunny
really? vistas fine on my pc at home. the problem with every new OS is that people who shouldn't be trying to install it do try to install it. they've got old hardware and they're trying to put new software on it, guess what, it's not always gonna work well. i've got a 486 at home with 24 megs of ram and guess what would happen if i tried to install windows xp on it.... thats right, it wouldn't work. does that then mean i should call xp a flop because my 486 can't handle it, since thats what alot of people did with vista.
TS, win 7 is arguably less of a memory hog than vista and should therefore result in lower system requirements and quicker speeds.
Naw, as far as I've tested, 7 is very stable and there's fun features. It sure won't replace my Xp 64bit, but it's nice. It's much lighter and more effiecient. Windows 7 is going to make Vista useless.
Well I wasn't satisfied with fine, even if I have 3-4 gigs the Vista is stealing way too much resources. I would only pick it if I had to, like in a pack-in deal.really? vistas fine on my pc at home. the problem with every new OS is that people who shouldn't be trying to install it do try to install it. they've got old hardware and they're trying to put new software on it, guess what, it's not always gonna work well. i've got a 486 at home with 24 megs of ram and guess what would happen if i tried to install windows xp on it.... thats right, it wouldn't work. does that then mean i should call xp a flop because my 486 can't handle it, since thats what alot of people did with vista.

My computer I pretty much had customized to run Vista as fast as possible. Even while gaming I don't get much of a slowdown from Vista using too much of PC's resources. Windows 7 should really run fast on my PC. What I'm hoping for is that 7 actually gets more support from game developers.
but you gotta admit, that facebook update is plain horrible :Pnothing wrong with vista it just that people dont like the change and complain just like with facebook with every update the requirements are gonna be higher

how can you not be satisfied with fine? i mean if you don't like it then thats fair, its your opinion and you're definitely entitled to it but i don't see how something running fine is inadequate for you.
might wanna try turning off things like superfetching, that can free up some resources for your system (i turned off all the prefetching/superfetching etc tasks that suck up valuable memory unnecessarily)
Vista isn't that bad, not bad at all to me. I'm not missing anything about XP really, I love the new fancier look(eventhough people said XP has an optipn to look like Vista now which is really a **** over on Microsoft's part). If I had to go bad to XP... I'd say no, only thing I miss about XP is the fact that I could use that old version of Bearshare which could find everything.
Vista had a rough launch on the 64-bit side, but it's a great operating system at this point. Hardly a flop.
Also, SPOILERS: Windows 7 is Vista with a new paint job (mostly just interface improvements.)
Really? Then what about the performance increases I have been reading and hearing since the release of Windows 7 beta?Vista had a rough launch on the 64-bit side, but it's a great operating system at this point. Hardly a flop.

At default settings it has slightly quicker boot times and lower idle RAM consumption. Things you can achieve already in Vista by tweaking services and boot options (it's nice that they're optimizing the OS for performance for the average user.)
As far as application benchmarks: some benchmark better in Vista SP1, some benchmark better on Windows 7. I've seen some promising comparisons in favor of Windows 7, but I'll wait for the actual OS to release before I get too excited (in the few little comparisons I've done, there's almost zero difference for the apps/games that I use.)
I don't know, I had a choice between "fine" and "more than fine" so I chose the latter :P ...what a person is satisfied with can't be seen as fact anyway, it's ALWAYS a matter of opinion and preference. Some don't feel like "optimizing" every time they need a bit more speed.how can you not be satisfied with fine? i mean if you don't like it then thats fair, its your opinion and you're definitely entitled to it but i don't see how something running fine is inadequate for you.

I dont think that's true at all, personally. They've clearly worked very hard to make it run smoother and faster, especially on less powerful hardware, and the changes to the interface are genuine new changes and additions, rather than Vista which just made what was already there in XP look different. Also, SPOILERS: Windows 7 is Vista with a new paint job (mostly just interface improvements.)

Well the W7 beta is overrated, IMO. My DRM movies scramble if I fastforward, it hangs at the "shutting down" screen 75% of the time so you have to manually power down, WMP doesn't fully close when you X out of it and doesn't go away even if you kill it at Task Manager. iTunes freezes if you try to download artwork or change track information, 3rd party TWAIN drivers don't work, etc, etc, etc.
And worst of all....the OS crashes every time I get into a fight in the greatest RPG of all....Morrowind. :(
The upside is that there is greater compatibility with drivers.
Is your computer actually capable of running it? Just that i haven't encountered any of those problems at all. Plus, it is a beta remember.Well the W7 beta is overrated, IMO. There's too much propoganda about Vista out, and it's just way too widespread and late for it to be stopped. Vista was pretty bad when it first came out, but with the updates, SPs, and now that people have updated their rigs, Vista is a decent OS. I've been using Win7 since build 7000, and it is far better than Vista, and provides almost the same experience to the user as XP provided when it first came out (by this I mean Win7 is very good for its generation).

I have it running on a 4 year old gaming laptop. Itunes and zune software run amazing as well. Haven't tried Morrowind but oblivion was running great. Vista has been pissing me off lately on my gaming rig (almost same rig as yours cept for 3.2ghz quad), so I might load up the 64bit W7 version to see how it works.I think that after Vista was so much of a flop, Windows 7 is expected by most people to be some sort of godsend. Therefore, disappointment is inevitable. I do think that it'll be significantly better though, or at least show signs that MS listened to their customers' suggestions.
How is Vista a flop? I mean it crashes less than XP did, and more thigns are compatible with it than XP, it has amazing security. I dont see the problem. But windows 7 will be very very good.Dr_Brocoli
precisely! whenever when someon's on Vista they blame their problems on it and not themselves. Vista is superoir to XP and 7will be better then 7.

link/detailed instructions for turning prefetching in vista?as for the original topic, W7 is blindingly fast, mush faster than XP on my computer (I did a fresh install 1.5 years ago). Vista haters, I can't find one reason a 3 year old computer would have trouble with vista. For other devices, like if your printer has trouble linking, guess what IT'S THE PRINTER'S MANUFACTURER'S FALT FOR NOT DEVELOPING A NEW DRIVER NOT MS'S!
I've been running vista for officially one year now nad have no complaints at all about it. I heard when it first launched it had some issues, but from what I've seen of it, it's cool.

True, there are a number of apparent improvements that go beyond superficial changes ..but the basic framework is identical to that of Vista.
Not that I'm saying this is a bad thing. Vista is actually a great OS, despite what many try to claim.
i pray not , i downgraded from Vista to XP because of the sluggish performance but damn man , vista's Security is undeniably better than XP , i stayed for an entire year without catching one virus , XP? got 20 in the same month i installed it with the help of three third-party anti-virus's and im STILL getting a virus every now or then , if 7 is not as bad and as sluggish as vista you can count on me to buy it day 1.
