...

I don't know what you said.

Anyway, tc, if your gums are bleeding when you floss...just floss more regularly, it'll toughen 'em up (usually)

Unless you have horrible ginigivitis or something.

Not usually. If you regularly floss your gums shouldn't bleed very often. If they consistently do, then you may have gingivitis or something related.

Consult your dentist if your gums continue to bleed when flossing. It may be an indication of gum disease like gingivitis. Your dentist may provide treatment in the form of deep cleaning and/or antibiotic tabs.

Gums may occasionally bleed when flossing, but should not do so every time you floss.

If yours do bleed, that's probably a sign you need to floss more.

Mine use to bleed but after I got deep teeth cleaning, it stopped the bleeding. You should make a dental appointment and see what they have to say.

I've actually been told that flossing is more important than brushing. I need to floss though because I bleed a lot when I do it once in a while.

Yeah mine do. I should floss more because I've had gingervitis a number of times. I go to the periodontist (gum specialist) once every 6 months, they give them a good ol' clean, works wonders.

Definitely floss more if they're bleeding!

I used to have your mentality. Now I floss every day. Seeing your parents nearly die because of their teeth will do that to you. Stop acting like a little kid and take care of your own damn mouth.

No, also you need to floss more if your gums bleed. They become irritated otherwise and hence the blood.

Before modern dentistry and society telling you to brush and floss everyday, a lot of people died from infections originating in their mouths. My parents just happen to have **** genes for teeth, and hopefully I didn't inheret them.

For those of you who don't floss, here's a glimpse into your future:

I hope you realize that by not going to the dentist now, you'll probably suffer even more later in life. It's not like your teeth are going to heal themselves. They are going to get worse, could cause infection, and you'll be in really, really bad shape . . . and the dentist will have to drill even deeper since you let it fester.

My gums used to bleed slightly when I flossed several years ago. A visit to the dentist and a subsequent visit to a periodontist revealed that I have a stubborn case of hereditary gum disease. So now I floss and brush my teeth twice a day. I even brush three times a day if I am staying up for a long time. I have no intention of loosing my teeth to mistreatment 30-40 years from now.

So your dentist told you not to floss?

Also, how old are you? If you're 60, more power to you. I'm guessing you're younger than me though, and I can assure you that you'll look back on that quote and ask how you could have been so naive.

Consider yourself lucky. I only made it to 21, but like I said earlier, I have pretty horrible teeth/gum genes. Hopefully you're the exception to the rule. But you're only 23. You're not even 1/3 through your life. If you continue to not floss there's a good chance you'll have problems later in life. How much later (weeks or decades) is anyone's guess.

So why should you floss?

Flossing removes the bacteria that escape the toothbrush by hiding in the tiny spaces in between teeth. Brushing without flossing is like washing only 65% of your body. The other 35% remains dirty! The American Dental Association recommends that you floss at least once a day.

What happens if you don't floss?

If you do not floss and allow plaque to remain in between teeth it eventually hardens into a substance known as tartar. Unlike plaque which can be easily removed by brushing, tartar can only be removed by your dentist.

Over time, levels of more dangerous types of bacteria build up within tartar. Mean and vengeful, these bacteria produce toxins which irritate and inflame the gums. This condition is known as gingivitis. If gingivitis is left untreated it can progress to periodontal disease - a condition where bacteria and their toxins invade not only the gums but also the bones and the structures supporting the teeth. This can lead to bone loss, loose teeth, and teeth which fall out.
