Ok this was just something I've been wondering for a while, what with there being a 56k warning on every thread with a picture in it. Does anyone even have 56k anymore?

Also if you do, don't signatures and avatars slow down the connection just as much as like 2 600 x 800 photos?

My parents used dial up until a few months ago. Apparently most forms of communication refuses to go where they live. However, they were able to buy a wireless adapter through Altel. The internet sucks but it's better than dial up. (Though, I can now use the internet anywhere with a cell phone signal which is nice.)

Yeah I imagine the only people still on dial up are those who just have never gotten around to switching, or those who for some reason don't have a phone line. It's definitely not down to price these days, I remember the day I conviced my dad to switch to broadband about 4 or 5 years ago, I went on the AOL website and the dial up was actually costing more than broadband...(not with AOL anymore though, thank god.)

If we trade cups for straws we could drink something.

This is how you know you've been on the forums for too long, when you see 56k and instantly assume it's a picture filled thread =p But just for you, here is a picture of a potato.

There are still some rural areas within the U.S. that do not have cable service. If faster service from the phone company is also not available, then all you have left is dial-up. Fortunately software & hardware exists that could speed it up somewhat.

And yes, sigs like the Jeremiah one really slow things down. Depends upon filesize.

Yeah that's what I imagine hell to be, forever waiting for a video entitled "Megan Fox Naked!" to buffer.

The third option was so great, I had to choose it.

Ive never seen a poll with that many votes that no one voted for one of the options (especially out of just 3 of them).

I think it's illegal to be that far back on the technology curve. Though, I do feel nostalgia for dial-up at times. I hate having information instantly sometimes.

I do if we've used a lot of bandwidth in the month (capped at 64k.) For some reason we can't get broadband where I live, so we're on ADSL-speed wireless. It's good, but not great.

You're lucky, I had 56k for 2 years before move on to 256k for another 1 year, now I'm on 1500k.

It has been less than two years where I live that anything better than 56k was even available and I know some people in America and some in other nations who still do not have access to broadband. SO there are a lot of users who still have to deal with dial up.

For some time, I've wondered why people still wither with 56k warnings on threads. The percentage of regular Internet users who are still on 56k connections must be in single-figures by now.

Haha, dial-up. The great sound of the phone dialing screeches and twangs. And then someone would pick up the phone and ruin everything. :x But I have a good internet now. :)

No, and I was rather shocked yesterday to see an advertisement by a 56k provider that tried to pass 56k off as superior to broadband. :? It mentioned price, which was accurate enough, but I should have thought that the difference in connection speed would adequately account for that. Cheeky 56k companies.

Ever play MW2 on Xbox Live? Sometimes I feel as if the hosts are running on dial-up, Infinity Ward is too damn cheap to actualy give us good servers to play on!

/rant

I have broadband, I could not imagine going back to dial-up.
