I'm wondering what it tastes like. If I like Slim Jims, do you think I'd like beef jerky?

I like beef jerky, but I don't buy it. It's too expensive. By the pound, dried beef jerky costs about as much as a nice steak.

And in that case, I'd rather just buy a steak.

It really is amazing how the price of jerky has exploded over the past few years. It used to only be a couple of bucks for a big bag.

I know, right!? I remember going to 711 and getting a big bag of Oberto beef jerky for like 3 bucks...now it costs like 8

And that was only a couple years ago! Jerky is supposed to be cheap snack. The recent price has converted me over to Jack Links beef sticks intead. I can get a bag at Wallyworld for $3.

I hear more and more people say they are making it themselves now. I wonder if it's like a catch 22 in the jerky industry. People are making the jerky themselves because it costs to damn much now so they have to raise the price because more people are making it themselves. :P

Another thing I can't stand about today's store bought jerky is how thick it's gotten. I like the good thin/flat jerky. With how thick it is now, I might as well just grill a steak for less money. lol

That's hilarious. Or you could get a nice summer sausage with some cheddar cheese. Yumm.

Never on a regular basis. If you get some real/local stuff, it is very good. Slim Jims IMO are disgusting and greasy. Jerky tends to be drier and have a much milder taste to the palate yet more savory. It is weird. I usually only have it when I go to the farm supply store to pick up dog food.

Why did I assume your sentence would end in "babies"?

I don't even know what beef jerky is (it's not a common thing here I don't think).

It's real good but like others have said kinda pricey. I like deer jerky too :). Also Slim Jims are not real beef jerky its pretty much a sausage because it has more than just beef in it.

One of the best snack foods ever conceived.

I can no longer find SnackMasters in my area, though, so I'm stuck with the inferior Oberto and Jack Links unless I want to buy online, which I'd never do. It's expensive enough at the store.

Eventually I plan on making my own, which is a hell of a lot cheaper, and the resulting jerky thrashes any storebought variety.
