Not one of those free ones that you download like AVG or whatever. From your experience, what has been the best anti-virus software that you've paid for?

Also, if you have a paid subscription, and your computer catches a virus, is the company, such as say Norton, liable to give you some sort of compensation for your troubles? Such as paying for you to reformat your system or give you free anti-virus protection?

What I'm trying to say is, in America, can you sue them? And would you have a strong case?

America is the land of the lawsuit. You could sue the floor if you fell on it.

Otherwise I've heard that Noc32 (I think that's the one) is one of the best. I'm currently using my free McAfee trial before going to use a free anti-virus program.

Ok, so you can't sue them. This begs the question of why have them in the first place... but I digress.

My more pressing question is, how come anti-virus programs aren't advertised more or shown in the media? The Internet is this mainstream place (but unfortunately may also contain... stupidity) and yet I never hear anything about anti-virus programs. The most is this really American and unappealing ad for Norton a few months back when I was looking at a video here on GameSpot.

I currently have Kaspersky, and it's the worst antivirus I've ever had. Just complete, complete garbage. The only reason I got it was because it came with the desktop that my friend got for me, and it will expire soon so at the time I thought that I may just as well finish it off before buying a new one. But my gosh it's unbearable and the tech support or website of theirs is even less helpful.

How come there is no definitive anti-virus software to use? And how come not enough people talk about it?

I subbed to The Shield Deluxe 2009 and it's a joke. :| No different from Bit-defender or any other anti viruses. Norton crashed my old pc so I'm never using that one again.

Anti-virus programs are nothing but an unnecessary resource hog. Then again I'm a computer genius.

I use the antivirus that is integrated with System Mechanic. It works well and the price is right considering what the other stuff does for system maintainence.

Eset NOD32 or Kaspersky and no, the company is not liable for any viruses you get. EDIT: Hmm. Problems with Kaspersky? I'm gonna be honest, I've never used it before, but from what I've read, it's the next best thing to NOD32. Then again, this WAS several years ago.

No. There are so many free anti-virus programs out there, you don't need to pay for one.

This, Microsoft Security Essentials is pretty solid, even then you don't really need AV unless you're really prowling shady websites.

I live in France and a few months back I saw loads of ads for Norton Antivirus, but that's the only one. I paid for Norton and I'm satisfied, the system scans are fast, and I feel relatively safe.

Paying for anti-virus software is a waste of money. Anyone who does, is a chump.

The best way to avoid viruses is to just use a little common sense.

Well for people who use Window Server they kind of have to. Of course Windows Server people are noobs, but of course mostly everyone uses Windows, and not some UNIX.

That's a very interesting thread. I personally have never paid for an anti-virus software, I'm always using the free programmes. It's all legal, I don't crack them. And I am happy about them, they manage to find the viruses just as good as the "professional" software. Moreover, they don't make my machine slower. The one I use is AVG.

Some of the best anti-virus programs are free.
Like AVG or even Microsoft Security Essentials.
There is one that costs money that was also very good... it had a blue cyborg on the package.
That one is absolutely awesome i heard.

The thing with anti-virus programs is, i heard, that these companies also create the most virusses for them to stay on top of competitors.

Btw my dad has had a few paid anti-virus programs but they were all worse than the free ones. (Panda, McAfee, KPN PC secure and i think Norton too.)

My parents are paying for my Norton Internet security and it has been great, all random viruses are always removed at first instance

Scanning was a bit dissapointing because I was sure my PC was being slow, but my virus scan didn't show anything but it works fine I find

Not much difference IMO. Just a few advantages like 'real-time protection' and whatnot.

They occasionally sell anti-viruses like Kapersky with full rebates so you don't even have to pay a cent.

Using Avira at the moment. Used Norton before I was computer savvy, never again. Also used AVG for a while, but then the automatic updates got problematic.

I use AVG Free 9.0, however, ESEC's NOD32 is pretty damned good and worth a buy, since it's light and has a ton of features unavailable to free ones

Lemme see... the best AV Ive ever had (bar none) is Bullguard, takes up very little resources and pretty much kept my pc spotless for 3+ years now...

(ofcourse I do have a spyware/malware scanner aswell)

Kaspersky is likely the best on the market, havent tryied it yet, but I am thinking about switching.

Before that I used Mcafee also an excellent antivir. does not take up alot of the PCs resources

the worst Ive ever had was Norton AV... a slow systemhog that helped nada...

I thought about installing AVG or Avast on my Linux box to see if they'll catch any tracker cookies or anything of the sort. Otherwise, I'm not worried about getting a virus on it since I don't install anything outside of the repository and never log in as root (when I don't need to).

Maddie_Larkin

How do you know it is spotless. When an AV program does not find something it doesn't mean it isn't there. It could be undectable to your AV software. People worry when their AV dectect something but you really should be worried when it dosn't.
