Once a topic has went beyond the main page is it essentially dead?

Or do some people read topics on the second page of the board?

Not really. Usually things that are interesting that fall off the first page are brought back soon enough.

If you have the list of threads up it only searches that board, when reading a thread it only searches that thread, if you have the forum list up it searches everything. That's something I didn't know until not too long ago but it is helpful.

I try not to go back more than 200 topics so 4th page for me. Its nice to try and get some of the nicer topics back on top that I havn't read yet

Yes, this topic is on the second page as of this post...well, before this post I guess. I go on the second page when there's nothing else to post in on the first page, sometimes I go as far back as the 5th page, but then all the topic are more or less the same as what is on the first page.

I have mine set to display 50 topics per page and 50 posts per page in a topic. I can see everything.
