I have noticed that there has been a large misconception between the difference between Hip Hop and Rap music. Hip Hop is the way you live your life and rap is what you say. So when you rap what you live, that's Hip Hop music. When you don't talk about your true life and story-tell, that's rap music. I'm getting tired of people categorizing and misconstruing the two into one art form.

I'm a fan of most Hip Hop music and it just disappoints me that people don't know the difference and automatically have prejudice against the music without full understanding. A lot of Hip Hop music has virtuous messages and have real substance that go beyond material things and vanity that you hear in mainstream most of the time. But people always look for the worst, when it comes to Hip Hop music and rap music. I've listened to other forms of music and the subject matter is, for the most part, the same thing. So for people to single out one genre is just ignorant beyond further explanation. Now if you didn't know the difference before, now you know.

I thought hip hop was a more light hearted form of rap, more for dance and such.

Hip Hop is the original name and in 1979 Sugarhill gang call the act of singing Hip Hop as "Rap" (from "Rappin' to the Beat"). Later after the so called "Golden Era" (1993). People started to make a difference between these to words as Rap => the Gangsta style and Hip Hop => Alternative style

Being defined by musical selections yields a very shallow person.
