ok so i didnt know how to word the title properly, but im sure itll get people to enter the thread because it sounds like a anti religion thread. its not.

here is my example. i have a few christian friends , all of whom are into metal. one in particular will not listen to bands like slayer, mercyful fate, or any black metal band because they are satanic / anti religious ( in lyrics , the bands themselves, at least for the most part are not) . on the other hand he is very deep into death metal, which to me is kind of ironic. he's not necisarily big on religion, he dosnt go to church every week, but once in a wile, and we often have religious discussions respectfully , him being on the religion side, me being athiest.

on the other hand i have other religious friends that listen to anything, watch anything, read anything, even if its message is completely against what they claim that they believe.

i can definately understand this, they keep an open mind and they do not take the content seriously. ( like slayer for perfect example)

so for you religious people on the good o'l OT.. whats your view? can you listen to south of heaven, hell awaits and god hates us all without feeling like a sinner, or is that kind of stuff an absolute no no for you?

I don't think religion holds anyone back; they hold themselves back. Nowhere does God say that you can't listen to Slayer or read Paradise Lost.

I'm Christian, but there isn't any music I wouldn't listen to (except pro-Satan or anti-Christian music, which most likely isn't my type of music anyways - I don't listen to metal/death metal music).

I have noticed it too that many religious youngsters miss many good genres of music (I'm talkin about harder music like black, death, thras) and remain listening to Christian Metalcore, Grindcore.

I'm not terribly religious, but my rather vague religious beliefs say that aggressive, anxious, paranoid sounding music is bad. However, music can always be reacted to with different emotions at different times. Squarepusher in an interview said that the morality of music composition could not very well be considered with the diversity and unpredictability of its effects upon a given individual. My religion is basically to be happy, and to practice compassion, and though music does not always help me in that, I do not believe it is against my religious beliefs fundamentally. I know this is not related to the topic, but I very much feel that religion has been essential in the development of music throughout all cultures.

I'm a fairly religious person but I wouldn't say my religion is holding me back. True I don't listen to death metal or anything like that but that's just because I think it sucks.

Hell no.I listen to Slayer and I have my faith too.Heck, even Tom Araya is a religious person and he's IN Slayer...

If I wanted to, I'd listen to Black Metal too, but I don't because I think it sounds horrific.

this thread was meant to ask the religious people, so if your not religious, why post? i wasnt asking you. kthx misanthropic, listen to bathory or to get used to the vocals before getting into the style, listen to mercyful fate, their a speed ( post maiden ) metal band with high vocals ( king diamond) resemblind halfords high notes, but sang that way a lot more. when your ready, try bathory out

i myself am the opposite, i will not listen to christian metal bands, for ex kings x is said to be like in the top prog metal bands, but their christian. so im staying away.. i dont want to get brainwashed by that stuff. people always hand out mormon bibles outside my college , and as i walk by they practicly put them in my hand, i take them, rip a couple pages out while i walk away, ( they see it) and then i throw it in the nearest trash can. lol @ handing out a bible to a guy with a venom shirt on. " the pentagram on my shirt means that i am a confused soul and am in desperate need of finding the lord"

It's rather difficult for me to listen to any type of music for pure enjoyment factor. I actually can only listen to specific Christian music with a lot of meaning for any length of time as I get so distracted. I might enjoy specific aspects of other types of music, but I love theologically rich music... (Do not think that any majority of Christians are the same as me...) Also, I can't stand morally corrupt music for any length of time...

i can definately understand this, they keep an open mind and they do not take the content seriously. ( like slayer for perfect example)

nimatoad2000

Hating Slayer is NOT keeping an open mind- it is the opposite. Slayer addresses topics that many consider taboo, for irrational reasons. Isolating oneself from facets of life that one considers "distasteful" is "distasteful" in and of itself. Life is life, and deliberately trying to disregard elements of it is ignorance.

as for literature, no it doesn't. Harry Potter was charged on being sanatic (for several reasons) yet it still was a bestseller

Yes and no... actually I don't really know. I don't like songs like those (both cuz of genre and lyrics). But rather it's because of my religion, personal tastes, or even my personal tastes but those are the way they are cuz of growing up with said religion is still in question. I think over all it's because of the person I am, if I didn't believe what I do I still probably wouldn't like those kinds of things.

In terms of Music, yes I listen only to Christian music. (I don't like Death Metal anyway). Reading wise, I will read just about anything, even if is not exactly in favor of Christians or has stuff not exactly appropriate. Of course that is partly because I don't know what to expect when I get a book. It bothers me, but I just don't really focus on that.

saxsoon, you only listen to christian stuff? so no classic rock or anything? wow thats hugely limiting.. thats not only not listening to anti religious stuff, but you dont listen to neutral stuff either? and also none of the bands i mentioned are death metal. slayer is thrash, and i touched on some black metal . ( black is satanic, death is like a horror movie script)

Definitely. I wouldn't be able to get into a band that portrays a theistic dogma in a positive way. Take Flyleaf for example; they have some catchy hooks here and there but the lyrics have a Christianity theme, thus making it impossible for me to be a fan of theirs.

The lyrics can be pretty disgusting. Crimson Moonlight used to be an OK gospel BM act ( later changed to BM/grind) but the preaching lyrics somewhat turned me away from their music. Truly scary ****.

Edit: Yup I kinda tripped on my own logic there  oh well.

im an atheist, but i love cynic. cynic is more spiritual than ill likely ever be, but that doesnt stop me from enjoying their creativity and musical articulation.

im pretty easy going with literature as well. i liked moby dick a lot, despite its christian themes, mostly because i like how they were conveyed and i liked the overall tone of them. though i will point out the obvious and say that i draw the line at philosphy. cs lewis' strictly theological texts make me want to vomit.
