I was just wondering because when i play LockOn on pc, Russia has the longest range air to air missiles. U.S.'s longest range a-to-a missile is the aim-120c advance medium range a to a missile. USAF need a long range missile for the f-22 raptor which have a compact weapon bay. Well I'm going to start on a new project. I'll call it ALRAAM(advance long range air to air missile). Care to help out this sophmore kid on making one?

I can't help you make the missile, TC. I'm more of a mass driver/gauss cannon person.

Sadly, I can't. My mother discovered what I was working on, assumed it was highly illegal, and completely dismantled the thing. It actually got to the point where it was rather effective, though.

United States retired the worlds longest Air-to-Air missile, some years back. It was the AIM-54 Phoenix Missile.

ya, the aim54 phoenix was the only long range missile we have. now its retired because the f-14 tomcat is retired which is the only US aircraft compatible with it. Aim-120c is only medium range

Russia having the only true long-range air-to-air missile is not such a big deal. What's the point of having a missile with a range of 100 miles or more if the radar-guidance system to work in conjunction is average at best. With the F-22 Raptor's stealth capabilities the opposing flight of enemy fighters wouldn't know what hit them. As someone once said anyone can make a missile or bomb, but it's system guidance which keeps the US military ahead of everyone else.

Thats why make a missile that have semi active radar guidance which uses the f-22's radar and once the missile is in range, it could switch to radar active(Which it uses its own radar to follow the adversary) and the f22 could forget about the missile and leave.

That is assuming the Russians don't have something to counter the F-22 stealth. They have the best missiles in the world, I bet it won't take them long, everything can be hacked. on a side note I don't like the F-22s, they are far too expensive.

I'm actually not. The thing could've been a lot better, but it was fully functional (but ridiculously heavy-the thing weighed over 50 pounds without the car batteries).

Whats a coil gun?

are you serious? Well if you are, its like a gun powered by electricity instead of gun powder. it uses magnetic force to shoot projectiles. well something like that if you want more indepth info just ask

lol, the funny thing is that im majoring in Electrical Engineering. The coil gun sounds familiar but i didnt know what it was exactly.

Since it has coil in the name i assumed it had something to do with heating it up to somehow send something flying.

Your too late, its called the AIM-120D. You can try using the Pheonix AIM-54 or basic algebra to counter the range difference with an AIM-120C.

aw men, youre right. it has smaller and improved guidance system which gives more space for fuel to make the range 50% more effective.

Thats why make a missile that have semi active radar guidance which uses the f-22's radar and once the missile is in range, it could switch to radar active(Which it uses its own radar to follow the adversary) and the f22 could forget about the missile and leave.

That's just one of the many basic mode that AIM-120 have. It's called launch and continous update mode. It make the missile extremely accurate because once the AMRAAM locks you on with your own radar, you are basically dead! However, the weakness is that the launch plane's radar waves can be detected (even though the radar waves on the AN/APG-77 AESA radar that equipped the F-22 is designed to be very hard to detect by enemy Radar Warning Recievers or RWR) . Once it does, the enemy can jinx, jam or try to get away and "spoof" the AMRAAM shot. So the most likely mode is the second mode.

The second mode is launch and update. The AMRAAM has a "kill box". as long as the the target is in that kill-box when the AMRAAM turns on its seeker head, once again, "Game Over" for the other guy! And since the AMRAAM doesn't really need all the pertinent data to launch, only the target's heading, range and height, it means the F-22 can launch once the missile is ready! it doesn't need to continuous "illuminate" a target. In fact, a Raptor doesn't even need to turn on its radar at all to launch an AMRAAM! That's because the Raptor's integrated Electronic Warfare system is so advanced, that its Radar Early Warning system /information retrival system can analyse the enemy's radar emissions, and as the F-22 gets closer to the enemy, based on it's power output, frequency, location of transmission etc, generate the enemy's plane's height, speed, range, type, and other data. Once in range, the F-22's pilot needs only to flip on the radar for 2 seconds at the most to confirm the firing solution, and the "POP", "Fox Two" launch down the chute. Then maybe about 25 miles away, open the radar for 2 more seconds to pass down the updated info down the data link. The other guy won't even know the F-22 is even in the same address, by the time he knows, the only thing he gonna hear is his radar warning recievers blaring out his death warrant as a AIM-120 has already locked on to him and commencing the "end game". By then, there is nothing good for him to do except grab the "loud handle" and "punch out" of his aircraft!

AIM-120D in fact, will also be using liquid-gel propellants. This type of propellants gives much more "burn" per volumn then soild state propellents used in current gen missiles. All this means the D will have range of 90 miles+. Plus all the F-22's previous advantages, it can tackle any fighters in the world long before they can even react! By the time they know the F-22 is even in the dame country as they are, the only thing they can do is punch out of their aircraft and hope their parachute open on time or else they are a meat splatter on the ground!
