Alright, I'm a bit confused on this. I was told that when you vote for the candidate running for president, it don't actually count. Instead, its the delegates who vote for the president, not the people. Anyone else know more about this?

It's all run by the patriots anyway, so it's just an illusion of authority that is given to make it seem like your vote counts.

your individual vote has as much weight as a drop in the ocean, true, but in rare occasions the vote has gone down to that much (ex: Kennedy's election).

Yeah, your (and everyone else's) vote goes toward picking the delegates who then go on to choose the next president.

Wrong. If "Joe" wins the people's vote in New York state, he gets all of the delegate votes for New York. So our votes do matter.

You vote for who you want to be the final candidate in whatever party you're registered as. If you're registered as an independent, you can choose the party you want to vote in. When it gets down to one candidate per party, you vote for whichever you want to win. Instead of whoever gets the most votes wins, each state is worth a certain number of delegate points, and you need 271 points to earn the spot as the next president.

since we go by the electoral college system it depends on what state you live in.... if your in a state that is pretty evenly split then heck yeah your vote matters... if you live in a state like texas it doesnt really matter how you vote because texas will vote republican.

I'm in Australia. Your voting system sounds complicated, but I guess ours gets complicated with 'preferences'. I'm amazed voting isn't compulsory - I heard one person wisely point out - The people who CAN be bothered to vote are the same people who can be bothered to ring up Right wing shock jocks on radio. I also imagine a lot of younger people are too busy to vote which leaves a greater proportion of older people voting and they also have 'older ideas'. It's important to vote.

not every state is though, not sure exact number, but i think its only a few that make them vote based on the popular vote of their state

I think it's really stupid how elections are sometimes decided by a few thousand votes. Let's get real here, they should ensure the vote is a decisive victory...Because if the vote counts get that close and the slightest thing can make the number go the other way, then did it really choose who "won"? No...I think they should have some way to let a president actually win once a required tipping number of votes is reached instead of elections being won by hairs.

It depends. Some states have very strict laws governing the delegates, so if they don't vote how they're supposed to, they get sent to prison.

So, what would happen if the vote stayed around the middle? No president?

If you are old enough to vote, but choose not to, it basically shows you could care less over how your country is run.
And when you don't commit to your society, don't be complaining at how messed up certain things might be as far as politics goes, because you chose not to vote and not care originally.
When someone who is lazy and complains over what they added no commitment to, it will annoy the people who do try to make a difference just so you can live the way you do.

Most states make them vote based on the popular vote. In a few, the electoral votes can get spilt, but it's still based on the popular vote cast in that state.

EX: Joe wins the NY populare vote. Joe gets all of the electoral votes from NY. Simple if you ask me.

And please don't start with Bush again, he won get over it.
