It intrigued me a bit. I was disappointed when I looked into the depth of it, the writer/director didn't actually know where he was going with the film, and created inconsistencies within his plot. He just said in the end of the day 'I heard about a story of a kid who had a giant iceburg fall from the sky and land in his bedroom, the iceberg came from the frozen wing of a plane flying above. I thought, what a cool way to start a film" and so was born Donnie Darko. They just replaced the iceburg with the jet engine to make it more weird.
After reading that fact, I found it pretty crappy.
The movie's better when you don't try and analyze it much. Take it at face value - a silly time-bending twist on your typical high school comedy/drama.
The director's explanation in the commentary (and the unnecessary additions in the director's cut) ruin the movie. His explanation is stupid.
i liked it and i somewhat understood it, but i never got the whole idea behind the ending, lol anyone care to explain it to me? Excuse my dumb 15 year old mind.:P

I have the Director's Cut but never watched the commentary. Good thing, I guess...
