OK, I've been struggling with my HP Pavillion laptop for almost a year now. The problem is that I'm getting intermittent BSODs. It happens mostly during gaming, but also happens randomly while surfing the net, working on Word or Excel documents. Anyway, I've sent the laptop back twice. They replaced the HDD twice and the same thing still happens, yet they still insist it's a software problem. It doesn't take a genius to figure out that after 2 reimages and 2 HDDs that it's some other hardware issue. Anyway, the 2nd time it came back with the wrong operating system. I purchased Vista Ultimate 64 bit and it came back with Home Premium 32 bit. They had the nerve to tell me I never purchased Vista Ultimate and that they didn't make a mistake. I'm going to try to send it back a 3rd time, but they said all they can do is reimage the HDD and see if the problem still happens. I've literally wasted hours on the phone with them, so I'm going to write this off and buy a new laptop.

My advice to everyone out there is to NEVER buy an HP laptop. If you do, then you'll regret it if you ever have to deal with their helpdesk. I'm trying to spread the word to save everyone the pain!

That sounds pretty crazy man. I'm glad I didn't buy an HP laptop as well. When a company has bad customer service, that's not a good sign.

Yea, their customer service is among the worst I've ever experienced. They also wouldn't replace the laptop even though it's within the 12 month warranty period cos they refuse to believe it's a hardware error, so they keep reimaging the HDD. The worst thing is that they don't write down the case notes properly, so there's no record of anything that happened. I've had to explain the same thing to about 10 different people! Note: HP don't tell u this, but they will ONLY replace a faulty laptop within 30 days of purchase. Anything longer than that and it's up to their discretion as to whether or not they want to replace it!!! Anyway, I think I'll go with Asus or Dell next time. Anyone had any bad experiences with them?

I had an xps m140 for 3 years and it worked good for me. Wasnt anything fancy but it did everything I needed it to. My mom has an hp laptop that she loves. I have used it several times and have not had any problem with it. But like another poster said to each there own.

Make sure all your drivers are updated to the latest versions would be the first thing I would do. This might solve the problem.

I've had an HP laptop for years and haven't had a single problem with it. I also know someone who works in a laptop repair center and they hardly ever get HP's in...they get mostly Toshiba's in...Sorry to hear you've had such a bad experience, but I think your case is one in, oh I don't know, a million maybe?

Well i did 'order' one through futureshop, but the nubs haven't sent it yet. plus, I suck at putting stuff in, so I want to get the futureshop people to do it for me.

... don't do that, it's easy as hell. Trust me on that. A complete tool can do it. Get a screw driver, unscrew the old fan, screw in the new fan, and you will see how to connect the fan to your power supply because you already have one connected in there. Takes a few mins.

I haven't had too many problems with the local techs (I'm in Australia), aside from the fact that they installed the wrong version of Vista and replaced the HDD twice even though I told them not to bother with it the 2nd time, but it's the offshore helpdesk staff that are causing me grief. It took a 50 minute phone call to get them to raise a ticket for a service technician to look at it...

Plus, I've called up 4-5 times and received the same treatment each time, i.e. having to describe the problem each time, refusal to believe that the HDD was ever replaced due to poor case notes, and being told that Vista Home Premium is the standard Windows that ships with my laptop!

Do you have more than one RAM module? I would try and remove one of the RAM sticks and see if it happens again. If it does, I would insert the RAM and remove a different one.

Never had a problem with my hp. Had it for quite sometime, still works like a champ. Every company has its hiccups. From my experince at bestbuy Asus, Toshiba, and HP are the best laptop manufactuers out there. My least favorite are Sony (Pay more for just a name brand) and acer/gateway, break down. But to each there own. Bummer you had a bad experince.

and FYI, every manufactuers has you talk to someone in Inida :P

Asus is the best for laptops! I keep telling myself that but my laptop's hinge snapped, the freaking thing won't turn on sometimes and I can't right click in Mozilla Firefox (could just be a Mozilla problem).

DO NOT go with a Dell laptop. I had an Inspiron a few years ago and it had an overheating problem. It would continually build up heat and when it reached a certain threshold the fan kicked on. When that happened the entire thing slowed to a grind, and because it relied on the fan so much it broke very easily and became even slower. I've heard this is a design flaw on most Dell laptops and I've resolved never to buy one again. When I say slow, I mean slow like you'd think you were on a five year old computer slow.

Protip: BSODs are almost always defective RAM. They're morons for replacing the HDD.

Also HPs are junk. So are Toshibas, Gateways, eMachines and most other store bought comptuers. I had a Toshiba laptop and had nothing but issues with it for the three years I had a warranty on it. The motherboard had to be replaced three times and it would randomly shut off.

Next time get a Lenovo Thinkpad, Fujitsu, Panasonic Toughbook, Sony Vaio, or a Mac.

Basically, if you can buy it at Bestbuy, it's probably crap. You don't even want the Sony Vaios you can find at Bestbuy since they're made in China, while the ones at the Sony store are made in Japan or the US.

Dells are junk unless you go with their XPS or Lattitude business lines. Inspirons are garbage.

It may sound like I'm overly picky but with laptops, what you see is what you get for the most part. You can't easily replace parts the way you can in a Desktop.

I've never had a problem with any of HP's hardware. They make good products IMO.
