(CNN) -- Houston police shot to death a double amputee in a wheelchair who they said was trying to stab an officer with a pen.

The man, Brian Claunch, was shot in the head Saturday morning after two police officers arrived at a group home for the mentally ill. The officers were responding to a report that Claunch -- a reported schizophrenic who lost an arm and a leg in a train accident -- was acting aggressively.

His caretaker had refused to give him a cigarette and a soda, according to police and the facility owner.

Police said Claunch was clutching an object as he advanced on one of the police officers.

Brian Claunch suffered from schizophrenia and a bipolar disorder, said the owner of a group home where he stayed.

"The officers made verbal commands for the suspect to drop whatever he had in his hand, to stay still and to speak with the officers, but the suspect continued to make threats," Jodi Silva, a police spokeswoman, told CNN affiliate KTRK in Houston.

Claunch trapped one officer with his wheelchair in the corner of a room "where he couldn't get out," said a Houston police department representative who declined to be identified.

As he advanced toward the officers, Claunch was "refusing to show his hands," the representative said.

The object turned out to be a pen, which Claunch attempted to use to stab the cornered officer, according to police accounts reported in the media, including by KTRK.

The other officer, Matt Marin, was "in fear of the safety of his partner and the safety of himself," Silva said. Marin then fired his "duty weapon, striking the suspect," Silva said.

On Sunday, the unidentified police representative offered more details, saying that, unlike his partner, Marin was not cornered at the time he opened fire.

Claunch was shot once and he died at the scene, according to investigators. Marin has been placed on administrative leave per department policy, police said.CNN

Never a good idea to attack the police, but this seems a little excessive. Don't know the exact details, but it would be nice if they would only resort to shooting someone if they were in serious danger. But then again, it's not my life on the line so it's easy for me to criticize.

Cop has obviously never played a video game. Circle strafe and then use a knock down and you don't have to waste your ammunition killing an unarmed cripple. Seriously the f*ck is wrong with that guy?

It's never a good idea, reguardless of your physical being, to attack a police officer. With that, shooting him seems excessive. That's of course if there isn't more to the story.

Tazers are for pre-attack. We may also want to keep in mind that maybe this guy wanted to be shot by the police. It happens where people will go after them specifically to get shot and killed.

Yes blame the guy for getting shot, for attacking 2 able bodied cops with a pen while in a wheel chair and while also having only 1 arm.

Pens don't even look sharp. Cops definitely overreacted. They should be investigated and punished.

Yea, an able bodied man, maybe, and that's a big maybe. A schizo in a wheelchair with one arm is not a serious threat.

Not really a maybe (in close distance), in my opinion, as a stabbing motion to the throat could be bloody lethal, but the wheelchair/one arm thing . . . HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

[QUOTE="CNN"] (CNN) -- Houston police shot to death a double amputee in a wheelchair who they said was trying to stab an officer with a pen.

Marin has been placed on administrative leave per department policy, police said.Person0

It must have been terribly terrifying and traumatic, the chaos that must have ensued probably raised the tensions and stress so high, that both officers forgot the man was in a wheelchair and could have.. a)kicked him so he'd roll backwards b) knocked the chair over so he'd fall over c) out-reached a man sitting down d) 2nd officer could have ran up BEHIND the one armed one legged wheelchair bound man who cannot reach behind him and pulled the WHEELED device designed specifically to make moving people easier, backwards.

I don't blame the police, why I doubt we have the whole story, from what we have I would deem it excessive.

Though mentally ill or not(even a child knows), there's no excuse to confront any police officer aggressively, we had a local 80 year old woman(100lbs) pull a knife out on a police officer and they dropped her to the pavement, I personally don't blame em.

How much of a f*ck up do you have to be to be trapped in a corner by a one armed man in a wheelchair? Hell he could have just bashed the dude in the head with his batton a couple of times and he probably been able to get out of the corner.

I wanna know how he was advancing (in a wheel chair) in a way that was also threatening to the cops. He only had 1 hand. So was he pushing himself or was he holding the pen in a threatening manner?

Oh wait this actually happened. ._.

Cops getting outwitted by a one armed man in a wheel chair...this sounds like something out of a comedy movie not a tragic real life story.

I'd love to see anyone even try to justify what the cop did. Not a surprise we have unfit officers on the force, it's essentially a joke job for bullies. a cop hit me once for saying I didn't consent to a search (his words "I'll show you consent!") oh lord, cops are fvcking stupid.

Using a tazer in this situation would have been overkill. They might as well have called in a predator drone for close air support just to be sure.

Like a complete moron who belongs in the looney bin. How can a man with one arm simultaneously roll his chair towards you and hide and object out of your sight. That's forgetting the other officer and staff that was present.

maybe he had already done something like this twice. the first incedent resulting in them cutting his arm off, and the second they cut his leg off. this time they figured he just wouldn't stop so they just ended it.

That's what happens when you try to stab a police officer. I'd hesitate to criticize the police involved too much since I have no way of knowing how it all went down in person, but that said, couldn't the second officer have just grabbed the handles of the wheelchair and pulled it away from his partner? Shooting somebody in that condition seems a little much.
