First of all, i'm aware that DBZ is the biggest Anime exponent ever, without it Anime would not be as big as it is nowadays in our continent or maybe in the entire world and i was a huge fan back then, however, lately i've been thinking that DB was a better show.

Why? well, i think it was way more creative and exciting than DBZ, don't get me wrong, the first DBZ saga against the saiyans was amazing but after that, it got really predictable while in DB the arcs were much more diverse, from the Red Ribbon, to the tournaments, the travels to get the Dragon Balls and of course the amazing final saga against Piccolo.

I'm not saying DBZ it's bad, i think it's a groundbreaking show, but i feel the original DB has more merit.

What do you think guys?

I agree. While DBZ is good, DB is just better in terms of storytelling. Both are in my top five anime/manga though.

I couldn't stomach more than an episode of either, to be honest, so I can't really comment on which one is less cringe-inducing.

Well, the first episode of DBZ is bad beyond words, while the first episode of DB it's actually kind of funny, now, how can you judge an entire show based only in the first episode, if that were the case, i would never have watched and loved Lucky Star and Clannad.

I am enjoying watching Kai even in my 20's.. There are only a few problems I have with it.. First of all, by and large the music is inferior to the American version DBZ.. And there are a few scenes they cut out that I really wish they didn't, or at least keep the same time frame.. For instance Goku was suppose to be on space ship for like months.. In Kai instead of doing that time passing thing, they just say he has only been there for a few days..

Good point since it's how DBZ should have been in the first place from what i've read, haven't watched it, but i might do it after i fhinsh the amazing K-ON.

Still, it's kind of unfair comparing and old show to this new version.

Raditz could already move faster than light, according to Piccolo. Considering his number was like 1200, during the Buu saga people should be able to destroy entire planets by accidentally sneezing.

Wasn't SSJ1 supposed to be a 50 times increase in numbers? And then Goku in the Buu saga went super anime mullet 3, so I'm ballparking his number to be around fifty billion.

I haven't watched the entirety of Dragonball, just up to the point where Goku was fighting the Red Ribbon Army in the really cold town.

I have watched the entirety of DBZ many years ago, but I also more recently rewatched DBZ up to the end of the Namek saga.

From what I remember, Dragonball is vastly preferred to DBZ.

The final tournament in DB was my favorite part of the franchise (DB,DBZ, DBGT)

Dragonball is cute, while DBZ is more action-oriented. I always preferred DB as a kid. But either way, it still took them 8 episodes to get through a simple storyline that could easily have been one or two episodes without a crap ton of filler.

▲ I havn't had the time to watch all of my dragonball DVDs, but I like them both equally for different reasons. But I think the first 12 episodes of dragonball are some of the best. And yes, I am a huge fan. I own all the movies, OVAs, and episodes on DVD. Yup, I bought them all. Deal with it. :p ▲

I have to say, that was one of the reasons i don't like in DBZ as much as DB, sure as a kid i was so hyped to see the new villain or the new result of the training, but now it's kind of boring to always see the overpowered villian beating the crap out of everyone, only to see in the final chapter a Genkidama or a Fusion destroying the villian, i miss those close battles in DB, i mean, like i said, the battle between Piccolo (Sr.) and Goku was so good because they were even.

Dragon Ball was less action oriented and way too playful for my liking. Taking DBZ at face value is pretty common for people, because it makes it easy to hate. But you can do that with pretty much anything. The Lord of the Rings is just Frodo walking for 3 books. Spider-Man is just some guy who throws on tights and webslings around the city all day. Harry Potter is just some dork who sits in "wizard" class every day crying about his dead parents. Anyone who actually knows anything about those things knows that those stories have a lot more to them. I felt like DBZ had a certain atmosphere that drew me in every episode. And yeah, it is unnecessarily long, but if you got absorbed enough into the atmosphere, you wouldn't notice. In fact, I didn't notice until someone said something about it 5 years after I finished watching the show. Then I realized it's true, but it didn't change my opinion of it. I didn't feel the same way about Dragon Ball. It was alright, but it felt like every other anime out there.

I dunno... DBZ had way more "holy ****!" moments. I remember as a kid during the opening for DBZ they'd always show some saiyan looking dude with blonde hair, and I always wondered who that was. Then when that episode against Freiza finally came to Cartoon Network I about 'gasmed out of my pants.

I like dragon ball better because it has more comedy and they didn't fight with the energy attacks so often. Seriously, in the cell saga it was ridiculous, there was an episode or two where it was just Gohan and Cell firing a beam at each other.

They edited Dragon Ball Kai alot. And I don't mean in a good way. Sure they made it look better, but they took out alot of blood, and I think they turned it orange. It was better when it was untampered with.

I'm agree, i remember an episode with this kid in an airport or something, it was really, really boring, however, i feel they managed the figths way better, specially because like i said, usually, the fighters were even and they were exciting fights, in DBZ the first arc was amazing, very DB like where even if the Saiyans were overpowered, you could feel the humans had some remote chance, however in later arcs, the whole Z warriors were useless agains the major villain, that is my major problem with DBZ, the fights weren't even any more, still a good show, but they got carried away with the aliens and overpowered characters.

Well, Toriyama wanted to end it after Freeza.

Goku was originally supposed to die I believe, after he beat him. Essentially, he would've called upon his SSJ strength, fulfilling the legend only to kill Freeza. And then die along with his new strength and Namek, just as the "original" SSJ had died along with his strength.

A bit too dark though.

I would have preferred this ending SO MUCH than all that crap that happened after.

I mean, Cell Saga was okay, but only because Gohan got a chance to shine instead of his idiot dad. But then, the Buu saga came, and then Goku had to come save the day again, as usual...

It would have been cool, but yeah, too dark indeed, however, i wonder if Toriyama would actually follow the story even with Goku dead, and i mean dead, not dead for 1 day only to be revived, it would have been interesting what Toriyama could do following that original ending.
