what are some good bands or songs for a longish trip ( 1-3 hours) in a car with 4-6 kids? I am makeing a CD for the car, i think a mix of chill out music and rocking music would be good, anyone got some suggestions?

You must not take night drives then.

And I would never listen to Amiina or Sigur Ros during a drive. Unless I'm driving to heaven or maybe through the snow..

personally, i'd go with:

Red Hot Chili Peppers
TV on the Radio
Muse
Beastie Boys

EDIT: i forgot these:

Radiohead
Modest Mouse
Arctic Monkeys
Arcade Fire
Interpol
The Reverse Engineers

although metal is my favorite genre, alt. rock makes much better driving music IMO.

Chili Peppers, Audioslave, The Beatles(if these are little kids they'd probably like this too), Fountains of Wayne, Dream Theater, Radiohead, The Who, Chet Baker, Sorta, The Eagles, Monkey Swallows the Universe, Gomez, A Brief Smile

Those all regularly make it into my driving cycle. Or if you just feel like sticking it to the man, you could listen to Michael Jackson's Thriller. Great album to have playing when you drive up with a carload full of kids.

Explosions in the Sky is perfect in a calm situation. The Pixies are good too, but Doolittle is probably the better choice from their albums. It's their most accesible.

I personally love listening to metal while driving.

There is nothing quite like blasting No Submission by Static-X while driving!

TC, I need to know if the kiddies will be listening. I don't want to be listing a bunch of crazy metal if the kiddies will be listening...

How old are these kids?..

I usually have my iPod hooked up to one of those radio things in the car, so I listen to lots of stuff.

Usually Red Hot Chili Peppers, Muse, Arctic Monkeys, Killers, and White Stripes.
