Do you think anime is better dubbed or in subs?

I always thought anime was much better with dubbed voices. It just doesnt sound right when the charactors talk in japanese. The japanese music also isnt good. Everything sounds better with english.

Also is it only because I speak english that I think everything sounds better in english? All the other languages sound like they have no emotion to them. Like its just mumble jumbo.

I will always wonder if english sounds bad had the only language I knew was Japanese.

Subbed generally. Unless I'm too lazy to read and/or just want to listen and the dub is good.

For like 95% of anime, subbed. Occasionally shows like Cowboy Bebop have awesome dubs though.

even when i was super into Anime. I didnt really like subs. Then as I was growing out of the anime stuff, I started hating the Japanese voices, they were so annoying to hear in most animes.

Subbed tends to be better but then you get shows like Black Lagoon or FMAB where the dubbed is leagues ahead.

I don't really mind the men but most of the women and children Japanese voice acting is terrible.

If the english dubs are as good as the or better japanese then I don't care. Unfortunately dubs tend to be mediocre so I generally prefer subs.

I prefer the dubs if they are good. I'm usually multitasking when I watch shows so I do more listening than straight up watching. Having the dubs makes it a lot eaiser on me.

Sub is almost always good enough to watch. The dubs arent always very good imo. However, if I had to choose between a good dub or a good sub, Ill pick the dub.

Some good dubs:

Black lagoon

FMA/FMAB

Eva

Gundam Wing

Mobile Suit Gundam

FLCL

Panty and Stocking

Samurai Champloo

Cowboy bebop

Dragonball

yeah thats true, but then there are some animes where the men are just as worse. Example, my favorite of all time DBZ. Goku's voice was like a thousand screw drives in each ear.

I don't watch anime that often, but when I do, I prefer dubbed. Subs are annyoing because I can't properly focus on a scene and Japanese voices always sound terrible to me. Dubbers almost always do a good job.

I prefer all dubs over subs. To me the best Japanese voice actors are worst than the worst sounding english voice actors. I also consider that all media has its good and bad actors. So regardless of how bad the english voice actors, they are a worlds apart better than the *** dubs. Seems to me people just like dubs or subs just based on how into the japanese culture they are. I myself see anime being an american thing. I dont consider where the anime came from.

Why would I choose to ignore how bad the *** voice actors could be? When the Japanese themselves might see them as being bad. Since I cant tell, to me dubbed will always be better to me. Overall japanese just doesnt sound good to me. Their voices dont reflect what the charactors look like anyways. At least the strong looking charactors like Goku or Clair from Claymore. English actors also has many more types of voices to choose from. Japanese all sound the same.

Dubbed. I can't stand watching anime in any language I can't understand, even with subs. It has to do with the fact that it's an anime and I don't like taking my eyes off the action.

On the flipside, if I'm watching a subbed movie, it has to be in the original language. I've seen Pan's Labyrinth in Spanish and in English and it just doesn't pan out the same in English.

If you're a fast reader, subs generally shouldn't be a problem. I forget what the term is but it's the difference between looking at written language and simply comprehending the sentence without necessarily scanning each individual word one at a time. I prefer subs most of the time, but the only caveat is I can't multitask and watch subtitled tv/movies at the same time and these days I rarely have the time to just sit down and give a tv show or movie 100% of my attention.

Dubs are acceptible if the voice acting is superlative. There are a few iconic English voiceover casts that I will always perfer over the original dialog. My list will echo some already mentioned in this thread:

  • Cowboy Bebop
  • Samurai Champloo
  • Afro Samurai 1 and 2 (although English was the primary language for this one if I remember correctly. The Japanese version was technically the dub)
  • FLCL
  • Ranma 1/2
  • Iron Chef Japan (not anime, but still awsome. FUKU-SAN!!!)

I prefer dubbed anime, although I find that "annoying" characters in anime are less annoying if you are watching subbed. But overall I prefer dubbed.

Yeah, in English, Goku, Gohan, and Goten all have the same voice actress as children and different male ones as adults. In Japanese, they each get a single voice actress for the whole time. Its why I prefer it in English. Although, Krillin sounds less like he smokes a pack a day in japanese.

Depends on the individual show. Usually the Japanese voicework is better because anime is bigger there and thus they can afford better talent, but sometimes the Japanese voices are annoying. For example, Dragon Ball. I cannot stand adult Goku's feminine voice so I watch the English dub(s).

Dub for sure. Though i know for some shows like Rurouni Kenshin there are 2 dubs and one is FAR better than the other. For live action movies though i prefer to have it subbed since the voice actors for those are usually terrible and overact nearly every line.

This. Unless the dubbed is really bad, but that's rare nowadays.
