Essentially. I got one as a souvenir from the Bristol Illinois Rennaissance faire.

My guess: Seeing as how it's finger armor and when you fought in battle, you would have armor to at least protect yourself. Your fingers are not excluded when swords are flying about. >_> You still can lose a finger, so you have finger armor. xD That's my guess. Probably wrong though.
