Im going to be a freshman this fall and none of my high school friends are going to the same college as i am so i have no choice other than to share a dorm with someone i dont know. Has anyone else done this? I cant help but to think it might be a huge awkward moment when we finnaly meet each other.

No, my roommate and I didn't know each other. We weren't best friends but there weren't any major issues either. It was a pretty neutral thing which is fine. I say you should room with someone you don't know just for the experience of it. Go out and meet new people. :)

yup, roomed w/ 2 people i didn't know. one guy was cool and we're still friends. the other was really freaking weird and i have no idea wtf he is doing now.

generally i'd say go with someone you don't know as it's good to have new people in your life.

I roomed with somebody I didn't know. When we found out our room assignments, he contacted me on Facebook. We talked a little bit and figured out what we should each bring for the dorm. When we met at the dorm, it wasn't awkward at all. He was cool. We were both athletes in high school, so we would go to the rec center a lot and play basketball.

I have had about 20 different roommates over the last 7 years. About half of them I knew in advance.

Yep. For my first 3 years actually, but by the 3rd year I also had two of my friends in the same apartment with 1 other guy.

Yes I did, and we got along great. We weren't friends and didn't have out much, but we respected each other's space, offered rides, etc.

Yeah 3 roommates I didn't know. Wasn't really that awkward you just introduce yourself and then live together.

Yep, and it was awesome. We became friends and I met a bunch of other people that I likely wouldn't have of otherwise, some of whom also became great friends. I've had some great roommates and some horrible roommates, but it is still a college experience worth having, I think. I've also roomed with my best friend one year, and by the end of the year I hated her. I was warned that friendships are often ruined by living together, though I don't know how accurate that is overall.

My guess as to why people hate eachother by the end is because they won't tell their roommate that they're doing stuff that's bothering them. It's much better to just tell them to stop doing annoying shit.

i didn't know my roommate freshman year, but it turned out fine. we didn't end up being best friends or anything but, as you'd expect with meeting a random person, he ended up being alright.

I went to a college many states away from where I grew so lived with a roommate I didn't know. Worked out for me. It's an adventure and you get to know new people.

You'll probably be good friends after the experience. I don't think any of my friends ended up with someone they disliked.

I've had five roommates that I didn't know and two that I did (all in apartments, though, so we had separate rooms).  If we're going to go purely by the numbers I've had good experiences with about three of the five I didn't know (one left early, I never had a problem with him but I'm not sure if he had a problem with me or not) and none of the two that I did know.  Meeting the ones I didn't know wasn't the awkward part, it was once we moved in and got to know each other a little better when things went south.

That's sort of been my experience, but there are exceptions.  One of my last roommates got into a shouting match when my other roommate asked him to do the dishes (most of which were his anyways), and he got into a fight with me over what to clean up when we were cleaning for checkout (he ended up not cleaning barely anything and me and my other roommate did most of the work).  Some people are just assholes that don't give a shit about anyone but themselves, but being upfront right away never hurts.  I've usually taken the position that everyone needs to just take care of their own business, live and let live.  That's rarely worked out well in practice.

I had my own room. Sharing a room is inhumane.

I agree, but you can still run into problems sharing a common area.
