So basically, plot-wise, weve got a mix of Metropolis and Pickup on South Street, but Blomkamp keeps things rousing, whether hes outfitting Damon and Copley with exo-skeletons for their inevitable showdown or introducing weapons that make robots explode in cool slo-mo fashion. One of Blomkamps most satisfying choices is too much of a spoiler to discuss, but it shows the kind of moxie that too few blockbusters possess.Alfonso Duralde of The Wrap

Yet if Elysium falls short as social commentary, as entertainment it rarely falters... As in District 9, Blomkamp shows a wizardly eye for visual effects, making sure CG images have the proper movement and texture to blend seamlessly with live-action and practical elements. Other craft work is similarly first-rate, including tyro composer Ryan Amons judiciously used basso profondo score.Scott Foundas of Variety

Instead, the film narrows into a series of standard gun battles, explosions, mad dashes, close calls, tough-guy fisticuffs, ridiculously fast downloading of massive computer files under maximum duress and, in the end, mawkish sentimentality. All the interest and goodwill built up by the sharply conceived preliminaries is washed away in a succession of scenes that feel crushingly routine and generic, not to mention guided by ideological urges.Todd McCarthy of The Hollywood Reporter

Can't be as bad as Damon's completely biased and false movie about oil fracking recently.

Do you really think fracking is a good idea, or at least the way it is being done now?

Fracking that was portrayed in the Damon's film was completely one sided, false and over the top. I am not arguing for or against fracking per se. Just a sample of complete bias and lack of facts to deliberately sway the nd consumer. I haven't seen Elysium, nor did I feel it was a political point by watching the trailer. I am interested to see it, since I generally like Matt Damon's movies.

Another movie with political undertones by Damon, but unless it is blatant it doesn't look that bad by the trailers.

What's with all the disdain for political/social indertones in movies? They're some of the most effective themes in literature/cinema (and something that science fiction in particular tends to do very well).

Maybe that's part of the problem with this Generatio. They get education from the movies.

Yeah well the script was awful.

Does it still have the scene with the kid pointing at Elysium and asking a nun what that is?

His next movie, Chappie, sounds more interesting and Yolandi Visser is in it so it's automatically 10/10.

I'm probably going to see it, but I will just be thinking that this must be District 9-2. I've watched and enjoyed films with much lower RT scores and i've hated films with far higher. I don't see me getting duped by the trailers into thinking it is something other than what i'm expecting.

I'm still looking forward to it. Should be entertaining. Doubt it'll have a lot of lasting value, but I'm expecting a good spectacle.

The comments on the film being heavy-handed don't surprise me. District 9 was about as subtle as a brick to the face.

I loved D9, Neil has an eye for visuals and knows how to use CGI effectively.

But, when it comes to social commentary he's one of the least subtle directors I've seen and I don't like it when movies beat me over the head with their message.

I'll definitely go see it, my last eyegasm was Pacific Rim and I'm in dire need of another.

I am going to ignore your assertion, and unpleasant tone. I don't approve of blatant political statements and influence from either side infused into movies. You're not "thinking", and forming ideas. You're absorbing seeds of someone else's opinion as your own. If you truly want to shape your thinking go debate that which you disagree or agree with. Ask why. Nobody is thinking for themselves when they are all in agreement with each other.

Why all the Matt Damon hate? He didn't make the movie, Neill Blomkant did....

And since I hated D9, I can't say I'm surprised. I think it will go below 50%.

If you agree completely with whatever you view/read, then yes, social commentary isn't of any intellectual merit to you because you're just a parrot who will agree with whatever opinion he happened to hear most recently.

That's not how people operate though. They listen to other's opinions. They observe the actions taking place around them. They reevaluate their preexisting notions based on the information and concepts they take in. They discuss their ideas and the information that have influenced them with those around them. That then nets them more information which contributes to the cycle.

Literature, cinema, and other forms of artwork don't exist outside of intellectual debate - they are a part of that debate.

While some movies may be less subtle than others in their exposition of a political view, almost any movie could be regarded as a polemic.

For example:

Smurfs 2 is set in the US, but it doesn't show the grinding poverty of America's poorest.  Doesn't that make it implicitly a pro-capitalist, pro-free-market polemic?

Wasn't Schindler's List a brazenly anti-Nazi polemic?

Isn't any war movie in which the US is the protagonist necessarily a pro-US-military polemic?

It looked pretty lackluster. I don't mind social commentary in films, but I don't like fiction that preaches. There's nothing wrong with raising questions through entertainment, but when the viewer is repeatedly hit over the head by the obvious and unsubtle message, I get annoyed. Sci-Fi is a great vehicle for social commentary, but it's these days, the commentary lacks insight and nuance.
