So I want to learn the guitar. Specifically, the electric guitar. Considering my enarly non-existent experience with an acoustic guitar, it seems almsot daunting. I'm thinking about actually buying an electric guitar (with an amp, of course), but what would the lowest price of a half-decent guitar cost? Enough to carry me through the basics to become a decent player. And about lessons, are there any good online lessons? I'm talking about nub lessons, by the way. Is this even practical? Learning the guitar without one-on-one lessons. I've spoken to some friends who can play the guitar pretty well, and they recomment I start with an acoustic guitar, but that isn't really my thing. So is it advisable to start there?

Which ever one you want to learn first is up to you. You can get a decent guitar and practice amp for about $200. As for lessons, I'm not one to talk about lessons. I learned stuff on my own. :P

200$ is madly cheap for a guitar+amp! :o I got my cheap-ass, strange brand but reliable bass amp for 189$.. :o If money is a problem, then I suggest you start playing something cheap like the Harmonica. Which is awesome.

meh, check out squier guitars, they cost 300-400 for a bundle I believe, but on the plus side, they're great guitars, and can easily take you from absolute noob to intermediate, and still be useful afterwards

Buy a guitar for about $200 and do a rent-to-buy on an amp. I rent-to-buy on my $2000 bass amp. ($40 a week)

First act makes an okay line of starter guitars, they'll probably sound not so hot after about a year but by then you'll want a really nice one...

As for amps-- Vox Valveletronix series makes an amazing tiny amp with a bunch of different effects thatd be perfect for you... gimme a bit and I'll links for you.

I started learning with the eletric guitar and it wasn't a problem just gotta remember you're not going to sound to Brian May (or DragonForce-- fallout boy, whatever you like) when you start playing. :P

I personally like the electric better--- easier to show off with, and everyone plays acoustic :P

All my friends are like OH I CAN PLAY GUITAR! But it's really just a few chords...

Lead guitar is whats fun, so start by learning some solos to easy songs like Holiday... thats where I began.

----- Here is the AMP--- may seem a little pricey but it will totally DESTORY anything that comes with a guitar---

http://www.guitarcenter.com/shop/product/buy_vox_da5_portable_amplifier?full_sku=482065%2e218

--- Your best bet for guitars if you wanted a decent one when starting out is to just go tothe music store and ask, simply just be like yo which guitar is good for a noob?

===

But if you're looking for something nice and cheap get this:

http://shop.firstact.com/PublicStore/product/First-Act-Discovery-Single-cutaway-electric-guitar,546,100.aspx

They have better designs but thats all they list on the website--- heck you could by that at walmart or toys-r-us....

It's much better than fenders cheap guitar the Starcaster-- that may seem like a good deal but its not-- it what I learned on and it's pretty terrible once you start to want to do the cooler licks.

As for lessons all you really gotta do to start out is look up chords if you're in to playing rythme guitar (I.E Green Day) then after that learn how to read guitar tabs (really easy, it shows the strings lined top to bottom and which fret to play, like 3 or 10)

http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/ has hundreds if not thousands of tabs for any song you can think of.

Youtube offers some nice video lessons--

I've never actually had a real lesson a day in my life and I can rock pretty darn hard.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=IJuI3N_F2CM thats me playing after about a year and a half-- I'm a LOT LOT LOT better now so don't let you judge me ability off of that. And thats just from practicing all the time. Mostly with the amps off while I'm watching TV just getting comfortable holding the guitar and playing up and down the neck.

Dude I love playing guitar and I bet you will to.

Ibanez Starters are the Best for begining people to the Electric Guitar.

This is ME after about 10 years of practice. This is also my new Ibanez RGEX4 which im still adjusting too, the neck is a wider width. The tone has alot more treble in this vid then I like, but its the best video example I have.

Don't buy a guitar under $200 dollars. Anything under is going to be really bad. Also don't get Epiphone. Unless you are getting an Epiphone Elitus the rest are overpriced garbage. Ibanez is good starter. I actually spent about $400 dollars on my first guitar (Godin SD) because after a few months you want a new guitar so I spent more to get a longer lasting guiitar.

ok,i play guitar, ill take you through some stuff, pros and cons of learnin electric and acoustic:

electric pros: easier to play because strings are lower gauge and easier to fret(push down)

some people prefer the sound of an electric guitar, and they usually have a cutaway allowing you to play higher up on the neck

you can also play very lous

cons:you might find when you pick an acoustic up you will find it hard to play

theres so many bad copy guitars about you may accidently get a terrible guitar and grow out of it,or worse, loose motivation because your guitar simply isnt fun to play.

Acoustic pros and cons:

pros:builds your finger strength up alot, perfect for learning

no need to fool around with your tone

cons:some people may get bored playing acoustic

dont always have a cutaway so its physically impossible to play past the 13th fret xD

so yeah, a good guitar would be an epiphone les paul,a great all round guitar that wont kill your wallet, and a cheap amp will probobly do.

http://guitar.about.com/od/helpbuyingguitarsgear/tp/electricguitars.htm

theres a good guide

Vox amps are really only good for ****c Rock and music that requires extremely clean heavy treble tones. Not alot of flexability even if pedal'd to the Max. Mesa Boogie all the way.

You're thinking of regular VOX amps. The Valveletronix series is a modeling amp that houses like 10 different ****. UK modern, 80's rock 70's, clean, overdrive etc.

So know what you're talking about before you be a jerk.

Yeah! Drums are awesome!

EDIT: Learn some Chords and stuff, it will help you play most popular songs(from pop to metal) while building up your fingers flexibility, strength and rythm.

Well, when I first started playing guitar it was on an acoustic. But I wanted to learn classical so that seemed the natural first step. First thing you need to do is go to a music shop, most places have a package deal of a guitar and amp. Neither will be top of the line instruments, but that is fine, you need something cheap, just in case you decide that you dont want to keep playing.

As for lessons, you find two types of opinions from musicians. Some abhour it, while others will tell you to get some lessons. I played for fourteen years before I went to school for it, and let me say, in my opinion it is the way to go. You will get more out of lessons than you will from just trying to go it alone. So I say go to your local guitar store, be it a Guitar Center, Mars, what ever and ask about questions. Just tell them you are a beginner with no experience and they will put you in the right lessons. It will be slow going with the lessons as they will consentrate on the very basics of guitar ie, Chord structure, finger placement and so on. One of the first things that you will have to do is train your hand to move in odd placements. You can make it more interesting by finding songs on the net that are in your level of playing and learn them.

I hope this helps, and if you need any advice or questions about songs and playing feel free to PM me and I will be glad to help.

I'd say about 200-300 enough for a starter amp and guitar. and when you start getting "decent" get better equipment cause it'sjust so much easier to play with and sounds better. I learned all by myself, so im pretty sure if you tried you wouldn't be that hard.

Your friends are right, it is best to start on an acoustic guitar. Sure, it might not be the style you want to play, but be honest with yourself, you aren't exactly going to be able to play like Eddie Van Halen when you first start :P. An acoustic guitar will make your fingers stronger than an electric guitar will.

I learned how to play on acoustic. After several months of playing on it, then playing an electric guitar, there was a considerable difference on how much easier it was to fret and play chords.

If you stick with guitar long enough to get good at it, be prepared to spend around $1000 if you're looking for a really good guitar; the gear ain't cheap.

They had a bass department at the school that I went to, and let me tell ya, they really put those people through the ringer. Youd be suprised how many dropped out of school from there. My school overall had about a 75% atrician rate. And it was for intermediate and up. They didnt take beginners. The reason that I went was because I had reached the limit that I could learn by myself.

A decent starter pack will run anywhere's from $200-$400, depending on the brand. Squier guitars seem to be pretty much universal for starters, and its been great for me to learn on. Just please, DON'T get a FirstAct/Nova/whatever other Wal-Mart guitars are out there. Go to an instrument store, and start trying out cheap guitars until you find one that you like. It doesn't matter if you can't play well (or at all). Just try some out sitting down, find one that seems comfortable, and see how it sounds through an amp. Good luck, and I hope you have fun learning how to play.
