I'm a real n00b at electronic music, but so far all the stuff I've liked has been stuff designed for listening as against dancing. My favourite artist however is thwe fairly danceable aphex twin. So, yeah. What're the subgenres that are just music, not dance?

Oh yeah, also I like industrial, but AFAIK that's sort of a dead genre now right?

How is Aphex Twin danceable...at all? If you like Aphex Twin I'd check out Kid A by Radiohead, Flying Lotus, and Squarepusher.

Pendulum. First album mostly, second album yes. Avoid the third album. I would also suggest the Klaxons and Hadouken!.

If you really want Industrial, then you can try the Heet Seas. You can download their albums at Jamendo. The entire site is in French, unfortunately. Basically click on one of the four albums below "Albums de Heet Seas" (I recommend "[1]" or "[2]"). Then click on the "telecharger" button. Once the new window opens up, click the other "telecharger" button. Then the download should automatically start. If not, click the "lien direct" link when it appears.

You do realize you can change the language on the site to English by replaceing the "fr" in the url with "en" right?:P

How could I have forgotten LCD Soundsystem. They have a nice mix of dancey and electro-ballads (Someone Great is one of th best songs I've ever heard)

Yeah, they're the OPOSITE of what I like. I think some of Aphex Twin's work is dancey other is ambient, all of it is absolute genius.

no i don't have it. i'm pretty sure its not out yet but what i've heard is that itsnot exactly drum n bass anymore. their first album was brilliant and i just can't help compare their newer stuff to their first album stuff. their second album was a big deterioration from their first.

Do you want electronic music that is more ambient than beat focused? Do you also want some that has lyrical focus?

I love Imogen Heap's music. It can be very electronic at times. A lot of her songs mix organic instruments with artificial electronic elements.

Yes hold you colour was brilliant, insilico was alright but really different from their old style. I really cant wait for Immersion, it seems like a cross of DnB, house, Dubstep. Plus, colaberation with the prodigy

Orbital

Burial

those two are my favorites

EDIT: on a side note you should look into the Donkey Kong country 1-3 soundtracks. I find them to be perhaps the greatest in VGM. Check out the tunes forest Interlude, Stickerbrush Symphony, and Aquatic Ambiance.

Electronica band "Syntax."

Uhh... I guess there's plenty of trance songs. Start with anything off the album In My Memory by Tiesto on YouTube and just go from there.

Would that be me? >_>

I'm not too great at explaining differences.

This song is from a genre known as bounce, donk or scouse house, but the chorus actually has some electronic sounds to give you an idea. Donk is a form of dance.

Trance is just... way different. I haven't studied music so I couldn't tell you technically how, or even in my own words, besides "deeper".

Pendulum's great if you're looking for jump up D&B, but if you're looking for real D&B then it's not the place to start - their stuff before Hold Your Colour was amazing. If Immersion is even 1/10 of what Noisia's Split the Atom was, then it just might have a chance.

Liquid Funk is a Drum & Bass sub-genre that's nice for home listening. Some artists to check out:

Danny Byrd

Netsky

Commix

Logistics

L.A.O.S.

Bachelors Of Science

Agent Alvin

Future Prophecies*

London Elektricity

Muffler

Nu:Tone

No particular order, all of these are worth checking out. YouTube quality isn't very good though.

*the linked track is Liquid, but this artist does not primarily produce this type of music.

Other DnB artists good for home listening:

Shapeshifter (these guys have a heavy Soul & Jazz influence; they play partly with real instruments and have a vocalist. HIGHLY recommended.)

Seba ("Intelligent" or "Atmospheric" DnB artist. Very good stuff.)

Concord Dawn (very good, pretty diverse)

edit: spent for now, might add some later.

Noisia's new album has been on my playlist constantly as of late. Music video for Machine Gun is awesome, too.

Fantastic stuff, though "Concussion" is probably still my favorite track from them.

If you like Aphex Twin I'd recommend trying the other big IDM names, like Autechre, Squarepusher, Boards of Canada, Plaid and U-ziq. Future Sound of London (especially lifeforms) and Amon Tobin are great as well. Warp Records, Planet Mu and Ninja Tunes are labels that release a lot of the stuff you're looking for.

Some examples:

Autechre - See on See (Just a warning, some of their stuff is extremely abstract and hard to get into. I'd recommend starting with some of their earlier albums before you dive into the Confield era).

Squarepusher - Fat Controller

Boards of Canada - Music is Math

Plaid - Headspin

U-ziq - Hasty Boom Alert

Future Sound Of London - Dead Skin Cells

Amon Tobin - Easy Muffin

Clark - Rainbow Voodoo

Speedy J - Drill

Berlin School can be really good. Michael Hoenig, Klaus Schulze (incl. his work with Tangerine Dream) and Jean Michael Jarre are three good artists from that genre (don't really know many more). It has more in common with classical and progressive rock and not really supposed to be danceable.

Michael Hoenig

Tangerine Dream

Klaus Schulze

As others have said deff check out Flying Lotus. You can't really go wrong with anything he's done.

And to add something different; check out Venetian Snares.
