Hey guys,

I had been rcently looking into e-readers and am curious to know your opinion(s) on the topic. I saw the Kindle and was sold until I saw the HP TouchPad for $99. I also saw its limitations for PDF reading, which is used for about 50% of the content I will be reading. I also came across the Archos E-reader 7c, which was like a half tablet half ereader. Any thoughts on what you guys use for ereading?

if you want an e reader get a kindle. the e-ink is clutch for reading outside and the batteries literaly last for a month before they need to be recharged. if you want a tablet get one of the others. i always thought tablets were kinda silly. they remind me of a giant smartphone that doesnt make calls.

I have a sony e-reader, there is a site that converts any ebook format into another so its easy. I like mine a lot, long battery life and easy on the eyes.

I agree that the Kindle is a solid e rweader, I like the e-ink screen. However I heard its performance with pdfs isnt all that great. I'm not really looking to buy a tablet bcecause I have an iPhone 4 that takes care of my mobile needs. (except I wouldnt want to read a book on its 3.5'' screen.) Anybody have anything to say about Pandigital products?

I just use the Kindle app on my iPod Touch, but for a pure e-reader I always though the Kindle was the best. My wife uses one, and it's solid, plus you can read it anywhere even in direct sunlight.

Now if Amazon would just get a little bit more sensible on their Kindle book prices. Sometimes they cost more than the paperback you can just run to the store and buy.

If I buy any e-reader it'll be a nook. I like being able to choose what store I buy things from, plus it's got a touch screen and compatibility with library books. The Kindle is just too limited by its DRM for my tastes.

I use a touch to read books, and it's really not bad especially since you can just make the text size larger, and change the background and text colors. Quite easy on the eyes. The scrolling is no big deal. If you haven't tried it yet you should download the Kindle app and play with some of the free books just to see what it's like. I find it much easier to hold the iPod touch than my wife's Kindle for long periods of time.

About to... what? :| And assuming that it was, it uses EPUB with or without DRM. Meaning that if they were to shut down, you can still get books from other e-book stores.

I like them too. Unfortunately the physical book and magazine market is dead. When you deal in an obsolete product, there's not much you can do.

It's not dead, it's just not growing like e-reading is right now. It's like the paperback was to the trade cloth/hardcover; it'll reach a state of equilibrium at some point.

Mark my words, within two years B&N will at least be bankrupt. Actual books and magazine sales are plummeting and they can't compete with Amazon in an increasingly online sales world.

I haven't tried those others but I have the Kindle and I love it. Most of the files I use are TXT and PDF which are the main formats for kindle. Its easy to convert any file to PDF nowadays so PDF compatibility is important. I have saved so much money of books and textbooks with my kindle its not even funny. The battery lasts over 4 weeks without charging. I highly recommend it

I'd wait a little longer and look at the next gen kindle. Currently the kindle has the best environment for getting books in the most formats, but it now has the clunkiest interface due to the lack of a touch screen.

*sigh* That's why they got into the e-reader business. People forget that Borders basically sold themselves out to Amazon by sending them there for online sales... the whole way I discovered Amazon was about 8 years ago when I went to Borders' website, saw that they didn't have a particular book, and they linked me to a page on Amazon where I could purchase it. They didn't have their own online presence until about 3 years ago, which was too late (not to mention they didn't have an e-reader, but instead entered a deal with Kobo Books to be the main US distributor of the Kobo). bn.com has been around for about 13 years now, plus they've got a college bookstore division. Point being, the situations between the two companies aren't as comparable as people think when you look at it in detail. Borders' plan was just build build build build big and they'll come.

That's the problem with youth these days they are always wanting to hit the net with every damn device. I use a reading device(get ready for it!) for *gasp* reading only. Also, I read in sunlight and/or daytime more so Kindle was much better under those circumstances so that made my buying choice easy.

I have yet to buy an e-reader. I am not interested in one and the Kindle, at least the new one with the e-ink cannot be read in the dark. Now I know you can't read a book in the dark either, but a backlight would be a needed feature to entice me to buy one. Being able to read while on the way to or from a job and traveling at night means no extraneous interior lights in a vehicle and no reading. If I am not driving, I would read if I could.

The one problem I despise about the Kindle is the amazon service in searching for books on it SUCKS.. Inless you know exactly what your looking for, you would be better off browsing on amazon on yoru computer.. Figuring out what you want, then going to the kindle to buy it.

Another vore for the Kindle. I love it. The books, for the most part are cheaper than the shelf counterpart and they have the built in dictionary and interent. Only drawback is that it's not in color, which is really only important for magazines.

I also love being able to change books on the fly. When you are reading one and are out somewhere you are stuck with that one book.
