What makes me laugh is the thread the other day where a few users argued that Europe was in fact a country due to the EU.LJS9502_basic
its a different aproach there, basically the E.U. is trying to join Europe as one country, kind of like the USA, its one country but it has 50 states. But saying that Europe is a country is dead wrong
What makes me laugh is the thread the other day where a few users argued that Europe was in fact a country due to the EU.LJS9502_basic
I think thats more of a philosphical question, because most people think Europe is headed to becoming one country. I could be giving people too much credit here though, I didnt really read that thread i dont think
but what she though is just... wow

I realize that. And I think wht EU will eventually be one country unless the individual countries wake up.Ahh thats a shame I thought id hate her for it but I dont, and that TV show host is sexist as hell..wizard90
television is sexist in general in the states, usually towards men. especially in the realm of the sitcom
Funny how hardly any fans laugh when she says "I thought Europe was a country" because they all probably agree with her.Brainkiller05
i was thinking the same thing haha

America has the same languange and overall culture, and if im not mistaken only once did the American states fight themselves, during your civil war.[QUOTE="st1ka"][QUOTE="LJS9502_basic"]What makes me laugh is the thread the other day where a few users argued that Europe was in fact a country due to the EU.LJS9502_basic

You didn't think it would be a shame to have one vanilla country instead of the various cultures?Obviously you are against it for some reason. Well, that's your opinion but aren't you from the US? Why do you care?

Wow. It was great seeing how the 5th grader was thinking "oh, stupid!".
Sad thing is, Europe might turn into a country in this age. Curse the day that happens. Especially if it's governed by the people sitting in the parliament right now.

i believe its possible to become one country while still maintaining our culture, just look at switzerland they speak 3 languages there, or Canada they speak 2 languages there

Hey, in Europe we're having opinions about the next American president too. Europe and America have a lot of influence I quess. He's probably against it because the european parliament (and other commisions etc.) that's sitting in brussel right now is undemocratic as hell, and the individual nations differ a lot about the wanted government. Obviously a lot of european countries would have laws they don't agree with at all. But when the new European treaty is agreed upon the countries probably can't do much about it anymore.

Well, I'm indifferent when it comes to culture. I know what you mean when you ask that question but difference between cultures is also what brought us violence, suffering and war. I doubt that the different cultures will be completely forgotten. I think countries will still have many differences because cultural traits are not forgotten over night.
I don't want to hijack this topic so I'll just say this. I think it is a step in the right direction.

Yes but from experience I know that Americans often don't know much about the situation in Europe, just as how Europeans often don't know the situation in America. Which is why I asked him that question.

I believe Europe has a better chance of evolving if the nations bundle their economic and military power. Point is, that's already happening for many years now. The way Europe is going now is a more complete government over countries, which involves laws that should be issued per nation. I want to be represented by dutch people, not 95 foreigners and 5 dutch representatives. Also it will become harder to have a proper influence in politics. Actually, the european representatives that we choose have only very little power. They assign other people, who again assign other people who have power. There's just no telling who will end up in the spots that matter.Oh I know more than you think. I also know come countries aren't thrilled with the direction the EU is taking.Yes but from experience I know that Americans often don't know much about the situation in Europe, just as how Europeans often don't know the situation in America. Actually, I rather disagree with your approach there. The USA or the Union, as its called, is a nation that, for the most part, existed as independent and recognized before most of its "states" joined the union. ONly the thirteen original colonies are older than the Union. In essence, there are no "states" without the Union. Sure, Texas, Hawaii, existed as independent before annexation, but you have to understand that the majority of inhabitants in every state were Americans; thus comparing the USA's union to the EU's future union is a jump that shouldn't be made.. YOu have the right idea, certainly, but the USA is odd b/c the issue of state rights vs. federal rights were resolved in the Civil War (in favor of federal, obviously) and that, in my opinion, is the best thing that has happened for this nation's politics

I'm not saying that we don't hear anything about America, I'm just saying that some people choose not to know much about America. How much information did you get from the news? How many people watched that news? And how many decided to remember that information?
Just because you got the "news" doesn't make you instantly all knowing.

Well, they can leave the EU. It's probably an unrealistic choice but the choice is there. After all, you can't please everyone.
To everyone claiming that the EU is in some way trying to "join Europe as a single country": Please... Do some reading. Not only is this positively ridiculous, but also very untrue.
Basically, because Europe is many very different countries occupying relatively little space (compared to, say, the US), the EU is trying to find common ground / generally accepted rules in politics and economy by all member states. This has nothing to do with culture, unless you find the try to establish human rights in every country as "spoiling the culture". There is more difference between, say, Spain and Turkey or between Germany and the UK than there is between any two US states.
What makes "Europe is a country" so funny / sad is not only that it's untrue border-wise, but because its kind of representative of how little notion many americans might have of just how different the european countries are.
In Europe, when you travel to another country (so far I've been to Germany, Austria, Italy and Hungary) you enter a different world. EU / common laws / common currency or no.

yes but the EU treaty is giving brussels power over the country and even though it might not lead to one country it might as well be as they can overpower the single countries

True. For example, if our dutch government may want to apply a law for smoking bans (or make them obsolete) and the majority of europe thinks that's not a great idea, then we can't do anything about it anymore, because europe overpowers the Netherlands. Seeing as the Netherlands has got very different laws from other european countries, I fear the worst for how our country is going to look like. They'll start right away with the softdrugs.Funny how hardly any fans laugh when she says "I thought Europe was a country" because they all probably agree with her.Brainkiller05Shows how much smarter you are..

You're looking at the here and now...not down the road which is shortsighted. You can't say with certainty that in a hundred years Europe won't have changed. In fact, one way or another it will. The US is a single state for the purpose of countries. China can...but it's doubtful...at least in the near future. God could create little green aliens to walk the earth and let cows fly.
