I'll be working a soup kitchen for half the day on Thursday, my first time doing so. I do quite a bit of volunteer work at the local schools (covering their IT needs and some extracurricular HTML/JScript classes) but this will be the first time I've done anything outside of that.

Just wondering if any of you volunteer on a regular basis or during the holidays? Anyone ever worked a soup kitchen before? How is it?

What does that involve doing? Like cooking and stuff or just being someone to talk to? Sorry, don't know much about that.

it was mostly cleaning tbh, doing dishes, taking out trash, and general maintenance . I did it with a friend of mine so it was pretty enjoyable.

Yeah some voluntary work in a shelter in December (although I only stand in the soup kitchen.

Likely the oddest emotionallt kind of "job" ive had. Despite being there for a few years now, I stil lfeel horrible by the looks of how many people come in for such a service, and how many are too poorly dressed in the cold. And yet it feels really nice when they smile, and talk to you.

I do suspect that these kinds of jobs are the most common that will pop up in this thread. That and giving away clothes.

Yea but only through clubs or church. Making lunches for the homeless, picking up trash in parks, etc.

Hands-on kind of work? Nope, not anymore. Now I just stay in the background providing financial support for others to do it.

Not here in NY. But, at our other house in Tucson AZ, I spent quite a few weekends with a group picking up trash and debris along the highways.

Prisoners do the trash pick-up around here to work off their community service while in detention.

Not sure where you are but usually if you're interested in helping out you can ask at a Salvation Army or Goodwill or a similar place and they'll point you in the right direction.

this is really great to hear, kudo's to you, sir. I did it a few times and the experience is quite enriching. This was one of my first experiences in learning that anyone can be put in this situation at anytime. I've served kids all the way up to the old folks. The conversations were heartfelt, heartbreaking and inspirational. This is a good thing to do going into the holidays, the people will appreciate it and the feeling you'll get from it is priceless. Also, if you're interested try participating in clothes drive and youth counceling services. There are many trouble teens out here with a need for social support. Sometimes the best thing a troubled person needs is a ear that will listen. You'll be suprise at how many of us grow up without having someone to confide in.

From the sounds of things I'm going to be over the stove. I wouldn't mind being on the counter for a bit just for the world experience, as you say, however.

I've learned more from people down-and-out in my life than I ever have from anyone floating at the top.

Sadly I haven't been able to do much recently other than donate to causes, help out some girls through a local crisis pregnancy center, and put together some stuff for Operation Christmas Child (gives presents to children around the world for Christmas). Back at my university, however, I was able to be a part of a homeless ministry where I was able to spend every Tuesday night hanging out with, if you can't guess, homeless people. A lot of what we did was simply listen to people's troubles and seek to give them hope. We had to walk a fine line between enabling them to leave homelessness without enabling them to stay homeless. Some homeless people took advantage of us while some lives were dramatically changed.

I did Habitat For Humanity one summer when I was 16. It was fun, but I prefer to give my time to those around me, who have meaning in my life, than some random strangers. Giving freely of myself to friends or relatives brings far more self-satisfaction.

I volunteered for like 6 years at a local hospital pediatric floor. You get to hang out with the kiddies, play board games, draw, color, do puzzles, etc. They did an extensive background check too to make sure I wasn't a hatchet murderer.

part of my time this summer was spent volunteering time on voting no against banning gay marriage in the state of Minnesota.

but i don't do a whole lot of volunteer wor, but i have done it before.

For a couple years I did volunteer work at the hospital. I would visit the elderly that could no longer care for themselves. I play games, watch movies or just talk to them. Its sad because they don't get a lot of visitors even family. :( I also helped at a couple fundraiers.

Well my high school required me to do a certain number of service hours though I guess I didn't really "volunteer" since I had to do those hours. In eight grade I volunteered to help out at a church festival, though I did so on the mistaken notion that I would get free food (fried dough, pasta, etc.) so I guess that doesn't count.

The only volunteer work I did that wasn't for credit (or what I thought was free food), was my senior year in high school. My mother took me, my sister, my sister's friend and my cousin to meet up with another cousin and that cousin's friend to join some thing organized by the police dept. where we go on buses and deliver gifts and sing Christmas Carols to poor people and other people who've had problems in our town (and nearby towns too if I remember correctly). The swim team from my high school was on the same bus I was, as well as two Mormons from Utah (who had helped wrap the gifts a few days before).
