Something that's been crossing my mind a lot lately. I've been in college for a while now and have several credits under my belt, however I am behind and I've gotten to the point where I'm just metaphorically banging my head against a wall trying to figure out what I want to do. I'm tired of school, but I know I'm capable of doing something significant with my life. Do you think the military would be a good choice? I'm considering either Navy or Air Force.

Nope. I think I'll stick with college without joining the military.

No, I don't imagine I'd ever join the military. There are a lot of more worthwhile (and safer) careers out there.

Probably not the greatest idea to join simply because you feel you're lacking direction in life.

This is true. That really is a big part of it. That and lack of motivation, but I think I still have potential outside as a civilian.

I don't see why everybody thinks it's "Military or College"...I chose both. Love being in the Army and love being a college student.

That's what I was wanting to do possibly. My plan was to use the college credits I have, enlist, and then finish school during my duty if I could.

You're going to want to go Reserve then, then go active duty once you're done with school(If you want to go active that is). That's what I'm doing...

Yeah sometimes but then I realize that they'll no doubt be eager to put me in a combat role with or without college. I scored an 86 on the ASVAB a couple years back. And couldn't enlisted in the officer program in any branch I wanted but being the only kid my parents have left and not wanting to have 5 years of my life planned out I decided not to.

Although the money for school would sure help now...but I'll take the debt and my life as oppose to being debt free and possibly lifeless.

God no, low pay AND getting shot at?

That's like one of the worst ideas I'd ever have

I mean you want to do so I don't have to? Feel free, more power to you

I have a very strict "anyone can go join the service so I may enjoy the comfy cozy niceness of home" policy

Not everyone gets shot at. I know at least 5 people very well that have joined the military, marines and navy, and have never seen action in almost 5 years of service. In fact, only one of them has ever left the states for more than a week, and that's because he's stationed in Japan by choice.

Yeah sure, you want to believe that then awesome

If you think all that is somehow worth your time and doing so prevents me from ever having to do it then sure, you're just the kind of person they're looking for

Facts you mean

You join ANY branch of the service and that's your contract that says when the county wants you you respond

They want you in the fight you're in the fight

One of the oldest lines of recruiters is "oh no, you'll never see action, unless you want to of course (enter sinister laugh here)"

The idea of me signing over my rights so someone can have me shot at for something I may not agree with does not sound like a good choice as far as I'm concerned

I wanted to join the Navy. I took the test and was told I could do everything save Nuclear Tech, and that's just cause I was rusty in my math. Life had other plans for me, though I still think about what my time would've been like.

All depends on your MOS...do you know how many different MOSs there are? A cook isn't going on the front line anytime soon, same with JAG, Quartermaster, Civil Affairs, Finance Corps, ect.

If you choose a combat or combat support MOS like I did, then yeah, your going to see some action sooner or later...but that's what we signed up for.

I thought of it, came close to joining the Marines, so close that I only needed to do the swearing and I was in, but they never called me and I dropped off the face of the earth to those guys. I decided not to do join since the brutal training they do is not for me......

I joined the Air Force after high school and I don't regret it. If they still offer guaranteed enlistment go that route if you join.

My recruiter told me if you sign up for reserve, you don't have to worry about joining that war. That was also one of my reason for not joining the Marines too...

I'm in the same situation as you. I want to become a Cop one day, but I'm honestly thinking about joining the Navy first and after my 4 years are done trying to start a career in law enforcement, but it's a very hard choice to make for some reason. I have 54 credits BTW and I'm just as tired with school as you are. lol

It's rough, I know. So much time spent and I feel like I've accomplished so little. I've always been a better employee than student though. I just feel like I should be doing something with my life other than living the cushy life in school. Like I'm meant for something better.

Nah, I already had college planed out before I left High school. My brother joined, though. He didn't want to go to college and found himself doing low-paying bouncer and security jobs for four years, so he decided to become a soldier instead.

I'm joining the air force, swore in a month ago, expecting to go for boot camp in January. My understanding on the combat issue is that it depends a lot on your job, both of my brothers chose grunt work, so obviously they've both been to Iraq(Twice). But I've got some friends who went in the reserves, non combat positions, and neither of them have been to the middle east.

If your serious about joining the Air Force or Navy you should sign up soon. Depending on the career field you picked from it could be anywhere from 3 months to a year before you even get a date for basic.

I got a call from the Navy Reserve telling me they'd give me a 20K signing bonus. It sure was tempting, then I remembered that I might be stuck getting shipped overseas so then I snapped back to reality.

Joining the Marines was one of the best and most life defining things I've done so far. It's definitely not for everyone though. Which branch are you considering joining and what would you like to do?
