I'm looking at this vid and the thing going through my mind is how does this work? Do the polls go down depending on the weight of the vehicle? Is there some official scanner? Or are these people knowingly trying to get somewhere where they don't belong?

Sensor reads the plate and lets the public service vehicle through. I love it when tailgaters get owned like this :P they knew the risks!

In that case I believe only the buses and such can trigger them, cars shouldn't be there so he tried to rush thru.

 I love that vid, those people are so stupid. But I have no idea how it works. I think it works with the help of a scale or a magnet, either that or a signal is sent between the bus and those pillars.

They use the same technology that's used in remote car locking, it's just a little signal emmiter then laser sensors can detect when the vehricle has past over them

It's not like they're hidden and there are signs telling you they're there

Wow, that's kind of cool. They should litter zebra crossings with them, seeing as how many times I've nearly gone over the bonnet of someone trying to zip through.
