It's nothing more than a iPod/iPhone with a conservative spec bump. They start low and they release the 'iPad 5GS-DX' version and get the Cult of Jobs to buy outright once again.

http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/05/microsofts-courier-digital-journal-exclusive-pictures-and-de/

I can honestly say that no other device has caught my eye so much like the Courier has. From the videos, everything seems so natural and fluid (I however still want to see the real McCoy in action). The iPad has offered really nothing over the iPhone/iPod besides a larger screen.

Apple just can't compete against some like the Courier with the iPad no matter how hard they try.

Looks pretty snazzy. I'd buy one if it wasn't too expensive and supported open development.

Wow, looks amazing! I'd so buy that one over the oversized iPod.

I'm predicting it having tons of bugs.

I would much rather buy that than an iPad. Looks like MS can pull out nice things every so often

I'd pay $800 for it and not think twice, but realistically I hope they gun for a $300-$600 sweet spot. Just imagine how this would sell with a price tag of $350? I think it would be Wii-like in terms of sheer thirst for this thing.

But one last thing, PLEASE PULL OUT ALL THE STOPS FOR ADVERTISING MICROSOFT! Apple has been selling subpar crap for years and it is thanks to the ads. No if's and's or but's about it, without the massive ad campaigns, Jobs would be at the soup kitchen.

I think the itouch and zune are pretty neck and neck. But Microsoft wipes the floor with Apple on this one.

Yeah I still can't see a use for the iPad, or now this. But that's just me personally; I'd rather stick with my budget netbook that runs a full operating system, has a physical keyboard, has USB ports, and is far cheaper.

How is its functionality different from the iPad which is supposed to be a full tablet computer.

Exactly. I just can't see a market for things like this, especially with smartphones taking on more and more roles. If my iPhone (or any other smartphone) can do a majority of the things that the Courier and iPad can do, and is actually portable, then I'll stick with that. If I need to do more, I always have my laptop. I'm not sure how the execs at Apple and Microsoft determined there was a need to fill the gap... because there really isn't one.

It looks great, but I think people here are looking at it wrong. It is the worlds best e-book reader more than an iPad. It may be the device that makes me want an e-book reader.

Cellphones are great for small tasks, but I couldn't see a cellphone replacing an e-reader. Anything that involves a lot of text would just be better on something with a bigger screen. Also, the Courier looks to be mostly for graphic design as well. Image manipulation on an iPhone would suck horribly.

The average consumer would use a laptop if they wanted that ability combined with portability.

Did you guys watch the videos? The collaborative and deep notation aspects of the Courier are like a paper notebook on STEROIDS with a nuclear engine. Just imagine ebook notations with it, taking notes in class, brainstorming any type of project on your own or with your team, or simply just the entertainment (if you have access to the ZUNE store *drool*). The Courier has the prospect of being an invaluable tool, whereas the iPad has the prospect of being not much more than another money bucket for Apple because it is nothing but PURE hype generated because of the iPhone's admittedly rampant success.

If this is truly an inch thick, then it's a duel screen computer that's far more portable than most full sized laptops and a much bigger screen than a netbook. Also, if it's around $500, then it's FAR more cheaper than most decent tablet PCs.

It's not more portable than a laptop. It's either small enough to fit in your pocket (it's not), or large enough to require something to carry it in. The laptop could fit in that as well.

No, because a laptop would likely have died five-so hours ago. This supposedly runs on a Tegra 2 processor, which albeit powerful is not at all a battery hog. Plus this thing will feel natural to someone used to physically writing things down. And for a computer novice, the search seems super straight forward. It easily organizes content in a way you just won't get on a laptop without OneNote.

It will sell as well as tablet PCs. So, poorly.
