Whats with the hate for Hip Hop?

I mean, Sure MODERN rap (i.e: Young Joc, Charmillionare, T.I, etc. etc.) are very bad, but Come On, there are some good rappers out there, just not as mainstream (Chuck D, Eminem, 2Pac, B.I.G, and a few others) so, what is it about Hip Hop, that stirs people away/annoyss them, Im sure the repetitive dancing and lyrics in todays rap is a cause, but what else?

Now about your question, the biggest problem I see is people just don't want to give it a chance based off common misconception.  Face it, mainstream has ruined this art for those unfamiliar with the genre.  They hear what's on the radio, or see what's on MTV and THAT is hip-hop to them.  Also, having all these rappers in the negative light of the news media doesn't help matters.

I thing it's because of the Rap artists in general. When people hear on the news or radio that some rapper did something really stupid, they tke things all out of proportion and end up hating that rapper.

I think it's the fact that the music only appeals to a small population and at least these days is bathed in commercialism.

I like a lot of older rap and some hip-hop. Not for nostalgia's sake. Just because it really is quality for the genre. Not like Akon 50 Cent etc. The old rap hip-hop had this magic quality to be mainstream and at the same time have a very original sound.

I mean come on nowadays A rap song is released then suddenly 2 days later it's the theme song for a pepsi commercial? That is so pathetic. This happened recently. That hip-hop song with the lyrics "baby baby, just a little bit" appeared in a commercial basically right after it's release.

At least that's my opinion. But apparently JustPlainLucas doesn't want to hear anything bad about rap because he likes it and is willing to abuse his moderator power to make sure no one else says anything bad about it.

While the "rap is crap" attitude is annoying without explanation I don't think you should be threatening people with moderation simply based on their opinion of a certain type of music.

I wish people wouldn't misconstrue what I say and then assume I'm going to abuse my powers.  People can discuss negative aspects of rap and hip hop.  What I don't want are the people that come in and LITERALLY say "rap is crap" or "I hate rap, it sux" and leave it at that.

It's imprinted in a 10-25 year old's DNA to like commercial rap and hip-hop. It's like a cheeta knowing how to hunt. Survival skills. That or consumer brainwashing is getting more deadly. Don't know.

No worries.  It's just that I know there's a ton of people out there who can't wait to come into a rap/hip hop thread and think they're witty with "can't spell crap without r-a-p," and I'm just sick of it.

I used to not really like rap because i always used to see the commercial side of it. When I heard 2pac and truely listened to it I saw just how powerful some of the lyrics are. songs like "brendas got a baby" and "changes" are great lyricly. Just keeping an opened mind introduced me to other great rappers like the Roots, Talib Kwelie, Rhymefest and others. Keeping an open mind about these things is the most important thing it has helped me grow culturally and i have grown in my appreciation and knowledge in various gemres of music.

Might I suggest Consequence's Don't Quit Your Day Job?  Since you liked Rhymefest, Kanye also produced Day Job, and that is currently my favorite CD right now.

there are some good rappers out there, just not as mainstream (Chuck D, Eminem, 2Pac, B.I.G, and a few others)makaveli2344

Are you saying those artists aren't mainstream :o

Well, let's face it, the musical ideas in hip-hop aren't really sophosticated or interesting in any way most of the time.  They're repetative, simplistic and generally smelling of low class.  Most of what hip hop has to go on are the lyrics, because they're the only thing that can get impressive and poetic.  But how many hip hop artists can you think of with such qualities?  Not many.  And other reason why hip hop in general turns a lot of people off is because it doesn't deal with a lot of universal truths like other kinds of music do.  One thing you'll hear rap fans say good about the genre is that keeps it "real."  But what's real to you may not be as relevant to rich white kid.  And hip hop today isn't as profound as it was when it created.  People actually had a social/potical message to give back then, and sometimes they could do it with class.  Now, it's all about glamour and what-have-you.  How many times can you hear a good rap song on the radio that has actual real emotion, anger, sadness, glee w/e (instead of the occasional, predictable sappy love song)?  All I hear is music you can dance to or "get stupid" with.  Songwriting, in any genre nowadays, has really gone down the sh1tter or at least it seems.  I'm sure there are tons of talented artists, they just aren't being discovered or propagated by the media.  Because in general people don't like think.  Anything that requires brainpower is too much for them too handle.  Plus, corporations just want to make a buck.  They don't care if a song has substance or not, all they care about is whether it sells.

That aside, I do like some rap... mostly the stuff I grew up listening to and some more well known bands in the underground, but it is nowhere near close to my favorite genre.

Music, just like any art, is only relevant when it has something to say that is worth listening to.  Mainstream hip-hop and rap for the most part just doesn't have anything interesting to say.  Of course, most mainstream music period suffers from this same problem.

They are greatly unappreciated/forgotten today, for exapmle, according to wikipedia 2PAcs latest album Pac's Life sold (To Date)409,102 copies, Charmillionaires latest album has sold (To Date) 4.4 million copies.

For me, it's because it's become an utter hypocrisy. How can rappers like Kayne West & 50 Cent rap about life in the hood, shooting down crips, and living on society's fringes when they live in Vermont or Montana or Oregon in these lucious mansions? There are some good ones like Tupac (dead) and Snoop (I think), but the "mainstream" ones yell at others about "selling out to the white man" when they've sold out faster than the Wii.

OK, no "rap is crap" clear statement.  It's nice to know that you are asserting your authority so clearly...h'mm

I'll lay it out on the table- as a caucasian of European descent and upbringing, I cannot relate to anything rap or hip-hop has to offer in either musical or intellectual quality, period, in today's climate.  No doubt sometimes when I am drunk I can appreciate a (musically) basic cheezy "beat", but it mostly ends there.

I don't understand or care about the illicit "goings-on" in "hoods" or any other "ghetto" neighborhood.  I really don't care if some "G" got f**...basically, I'm perhaps trying to allude to the fact that the content (both from a musical and intellectual perspective) of said genre is rapidly losing credibility under it's own weight, to the rest of the world.

Is it any wonder?!

I dont hate rap really but the kids at my school who listen to this music genre think they are all hard and gangster that jsut pist's me off, rap and hip hop is perhaps the music that I will never understand and never will, sorry but I would rather get my ass kicked in a mosh pit instead going around shooting rival gang members for the hood and whatnot.

Well you should try listening to some Brittish Rap, or "Grime/Garage" as its refered too, good artists would be Dizzee Rascal, Kano, Akala, Roll Deep, thats what im listening to now, it may be a little foreign to most Americans, but really its woth a shot. All the talent is up and comming, nothing is really at the Mainstream stage, there is alot of talent comming from all Grime artists at this stage. If you want to listen to it just search youtube for their names or something.

tbh with American Hip Hop, its in a sorry state which is why I dont listen to it much right now, its not "Dead" and Nas only said it was to get money, in the end. Theres alot of underground talent that me or most people dont know, sooner or later the companies will know that if they keep recycling the same stuff over and over people are going to stop listening to it. So there will be a change.

Rap doesn't appeal to me because it's never something you won't have heard before. It's usually about money, drugs or life. What I like about black metal is the creativity you can have with guitars, the different vocal sounds (check out the new Marduk album Rom 5:12 for an example) and lyrical subjects.

That's just my opinion though. I do like Eminem and I'll listen to any song if it sounds good and meets my taste.

The main reasons I dont like rap/hip hop are:

1. The subject matter in modern rap is mostly all a mix of gang violence, sex, drugs, clubbing, killing, drinking, 'gangsta' paraphenalia (i.e. 'do your chain hang low') or just completely retarded and pointless things like 'chicken noodle soup'.

2. It has created a culture of violence, alcohol/drug abuse and street racing, especially in my home country (New Zealand)

3. It is garbage compared to classic rap like Run DMC and the Beastie Boys which I listen to.

4. It mostly consists of simple, sythesized beats/sounds and is cheap to make. That is why recording companies are pumping it out like there's no tomorrow.

If these modern rappers change their lyrics and attitudes then maybe ill actually listen to some of it. Until then, im sticking to old school rap and rock music.

I could just never get into rap to be honest. I couldn't relate to the subject matter they were rapping about.

People always point out

A. Rap is not music, it's just a beat. Listen, the instrumental is there for a reason. Just because it is not played with live instruments (except the Roots, which is a rap band) doesn't automatically make it suck.

B. All you ever see is the stupid rap on MTv. You never see the positive rap like Common, Mos Def or Talib Kweli. You see money being thrown in the air. Sometimes I can dig it, but 80% it ANNOYS me.

C. YOU DON'T GIVE IT A CHANCE

I actually agree with something Decessus said, which is kinda freaky. Da well, first time for everything.

Anyways, it's the mindless stuff like "Throw some Ds"(not the Kanye West remix though) and "This is Why I'm Hot" that most people really hate, but I guarantee no one can really bash songs like this or this. The second one especially cuz you actually have to listen to what Lupe is saying cuz he's speaking metaphorically.

I'm a rap fan, and that is actually one of my fave songs of all time. But read this. Be, by Common.

Waiting for the Lord to rise I look into my daughter's eyes

And realize that I'ma learn through her The Messiah, might even return through her If I'ma do it,

I gotta change the world through her

Furs and a Benz, gramps wantin 'em Demons and old friends, pops they hauntin' him

The chosen one from the land of the frozen sun When drunk nights get remembered more than sober ones

Walk like warriors, we were never told to run

Explored the world to return to where my soul begun

Never looking back or too far in front of me The present is a gift and I just wanna BE

don't like minastream rap because 1)songs are about the same damn thing 2)every "singer" sounds the same (when's the last time you heard a rap artist reach the vocal level of Jimmy Urine or the singer from Muse???) 3)Lyrics have little to no meaning 4)Reason why there's no instruments being played by people, because that requires a collaboritive skill. I think it's funny how other bands make funny of rap also, for example in one of MSI (Mindless Self Indulgence) songs the singer says "2 hookers and an 8 ball, can't believe I write this **** 2 hookers and an 8 ball, stupid people thinking I am cool." If anyone would like to suggest some real music in the rap genre to me then go ahead :)

While Rap is nowhere going to be as good (IMO) as the bands I like. It just wasn't made for me. I have respect for the older rap artists. The new ones shouldn't be considered artists. Come on... saying Smack That for an entire song isn't a good song.

Well alot of rappers do seem to do dumb things (like snoop dog bringing drugs and weapons to an airport).
