20 Sep. Guardian and BBC News

a 14 year old girl from Harpenden, Hertfordshire (near St Albans) included her address in a Facebook invitiation to her friends for a 15th

birthday party and was swamped by RSVPs.

over 21,000 people said they would be coming and that is 2/3 the population of her town:o

the party is called off the the neighbourhood officers are on patrol to protect her home.

she had intended to invite 15 friends and has revealed problems with Facebook privacy settings.

they did not cover the address on her RSVP.

her address was posted a second time(not by the girl) and more people RSVPd

so the officers have to maintain a presence in the area should any issues arise.

A spokes woman for Facebook stressed that privacy settings for events are separate from personal privacy settings.

that must be comforting:?

however.....

the next day (21 Sep) there was news from FB that they are going to reveal "simplified" single control privacy setting in response to user criticism.

So she's mad because she posted her address on the Internet and it 'got out'? If you are inviting only 15 friends, how about calling or sending an email?

..instead she'll be ridiculed at school. Talk about going from one extreme of the social ladder to another.

How could all these people want to meet a 14 years old girl? That is really sickening.

probably too lazy .... it was easier to post it once on FB. and she did not realize that the event settings were different than the personal settings so her address became public and everyone who lurked by could RSVP:lol:

So there is already a way to stop this from happening and she didn't take advantage? It's not facebook's fault. It's like buying a chainsaw with a genital protector in the box. Then not using the genital protector, and applying the chainsaw to said genitals. And then getting mad at the chainsaw manufacturer that you now have/had genitals that have had a chainsaw applied to them.

Id have gone ahead with the party. Id just have recruited some body guards. Some sexy.. buff... body guards..... mmm.. But yes. Go ahead with the party. It would be pot luck, and byob, but i gots a camp fire... someone bring some marshmallows and hot dogs!... and i got a grill... so someone better bring some steaks. You wanna sleep here bring a tent or you will be promptly tossed into the back of a pickup truck and dropped off outside a bar in the local town.

Hmm I've seen (and been to) free raves openly advertised on Facebook, none of them have ever had over a thousand attendees. Somethings suspicious about this story. :/

there have been complaints and FB has announced that event and personal privacy will be joined with a single setting. some of the younger ones are not as they could be about some things....that is why it is so easy for predators in some cases. people older than her have complained to FB when they assumed the events were covered by the privacy setting. they would not have changed the entire network over one incident.

The people laughing in that were s**te. Half the time they were laughing it wasn't even funny. Although they laughed at the present, which was a good time to laugh.

This isn't the first time this happened. It's already a meme.
